Co-Rec Broomball Rules
Time 1. Games shall consist of two 20 minute halves. 2. No time outs are allowed. 3. Between halves, there will be a 3 minute intermission.
Overtime 1. Overtime is 5 minutes sudden death. 2. If no one scores at the end of 5 minutes, there will then be a shoot out (see shoot out rules).
Shoot-Out 1. Each captain will choose 4 players from their team to be in the shoot out, two must be male and two2 must be female. 2. The order of shooters must alternate genders. 3. If after each team's four players have shot and a tie still remains, the teams will alternate with one person at a time shooting until the tie is broken. You must still alternate genders. *Remember that if the fifth shooter on team A scores, team B still has a chance to tie. You must continue to alternate shooters until everyone has shot including the goalie, then you may shoot again if a tie still remains. 4. Teams will shoot at the same ends as the last period of play. 5. The ball will be placed at center ice. The shooter must be continuously moving towards the net at all times until the shot. One shot is allowed per player, NO REBOUNDS. 6. The goaltender must start on the goal line and is allowed to move out 10 feet past the goal line once the shooter has begun moving towards the goal.
Eligibility 1. In order to be a participant in Intramural Broomball, you must be a student at South Dakota State University. 2. Teams may not have more than one player from the SDSU men's club hockey team.
Players 1. Each team must have a minimum of 6 players. You may start a game with 5 players, but you may not have more men than women on the ice. 2. Teams may not have more men than women playing at the same time. 3. Substitution is allowed at any time, however, no more than 6 players may be on the ice at one time. Players entering onto the ice must wait until the player they are substituing with is completely off the ice.
Play 1. Each period will begin at center ice with a face off. Play begins on the referee's whistle. 2. Two penalties of any kind charged to any one player in the same game automatically disqualifies that player from any further participation in that game. 3. If the ball leaves the rink it is awarded to the opposing team at the point where it went out. The broom must be used to pass in and no defesive player can be within 15 feet of the player passing in. 4. No player is allowed in the goal crease unless the ball is in the crease first. *Note - A player is considered in the crease if any part of their body or stick is in the crease.
Scoring 1. A legal goal is scored when the ball passes completely over the goal line, below 3 feet height and between the cones. 2. A goal will not be awarded in the following cases: a. The ball is struck by the offense above 3 feet height. b. The ball is kicked, thrown, or otherwise illegally propelled into the net. c. The offensive team was guilty of a crease violation. d. The goalie had frozen the ball, and it is pushed over the goal line by the offense. e. The ball strikes the official and goes directly into the goal. f. The ball is whistled dead prior to the goal being scored.
Forfeiture Of The Game 1. Refusal to obey the decision of the referee. 2. Team must be on time. A 5 minute grace period will be allowed if their players are on the way, but after 5 minutes past the scheduled game time, the team will receive a forfeit if they are still not ready to play.
Penalty Shots 1. A penalty shot is a free shot at the goal from directly in front of the goal at a distance of 15 feet. 2. The player fouled will attempt the shot. If the player fouled is injured, the team manager will select a play to take the shot. A player may stand stationary or run up to the ball and shoot. He/She may not contact the ball unless it is for the actual shot. Once the ball is placed by the official, the official shall blow their whistle to indicate readiness for play. The player then has 5 seconds in which to contact the ball. The rebound may not be played. 3. During the penalty shot the goalie shall remain completely inside the crease.
Minor Penalties 1. A minor penalty resuts in the ball being turned over to the opposing team to be passed in from the closest spot of the infraction. *Minor Penalties Include: a. Attempting to or playing the ball above 3 feet off the ice b. Catching, Throwing, Batting, Kicking the ball with the hands c. Pick-up, cover, or trap the ball with the hands d. Interference - not flagrant e. Player in the crease f. Holding a player or their broom
Penalty Shot 1. Free shot at goal keeper from 15 feet directly in from of the goal. Penalty Shots Include: a. Illegal substitution b. Injury from high broom c. Leaving feet to play opponent - Flagrant d. Playing with a broken broom e. Interference - Flagrant f. Throwing or sliding their broom on the ice g. Defensive player in crease after a warning h. Charging, roughing, elbowing, tripping, slashing, jabbing, or pushing i. Foul against goal-keeper j. Intentional delay of game - after warning
Game Misconduct 1. Results in immediate ejection from the game and the team captain of the opposing team may chose one player to take a penalty shot. a. Flagrant Roughing b. Fighting c. Foul or abusive language - after warning
Equipment 1. Intramural Department will supply the brooms and the game balls. 2. Only soft-soled athletic shoes may be worn to play. Official broomball shoes may be worn and boots so long as they are not steel toed. 3. Any player caught wearing cleated or spiked shoes will be immediately ejected from the game with no warning. No shoes may be altered in any way to enhance a players traction on the ice. 4. Other types of protective gear is highly recommended. Players may use hockey gloves, pads or other hockey protective equipment, however, Goalies are not allowed to use goalie leg pads, blocker or glove. Baseball/Softball gloves may be used by the goalie if the so desire.
Protest 1. All protest will be handled on the site of the competition. A protest may not be submitted where a question of the official's judgment is concerned. A protest may only be submitted where it is clear that a definite rule has been improperly enforced or violated. Only protests concerning eligibility will be considered after the conclusion of a contest or game, and this protest must be in the IM-REC Office by noon of the day following the contest or game. If a team is found to have players in violation of the eligibility rules, that team will take an automatic forfeit for the game in which it was contested.
