SDSU Pharmacy Students Finish Top Ten at National Clinical Skills Competition
12/06/2007

Las Vegas, Nevada

A record number of 91 two-person teams competed at the 2007 National Clinical Skills Competition during the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. The SDSU student team of Erica Peterson and Katie Orton placed in the top ten. “From what I understand, the SDSU team did an extraordinary job”, said Dr. Eric Kutscher an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at SDSU and local competition coordinator.

In order to qualify for the national competition, the team had to win at the local level. This year, SDSU had nine teams competing to qualify for the national competition. The competition involves a detailed review of a patient case featuring realistic drug therapy issues that may be encountered in clinical practice. Teams evaluate current therapy outlined in the case, identify and prioritize therapeutic problems and treatment goals, and create a care plan for review by a panel of judges.

This is the second time in the last six years that SDSU has had a team place in the top ten at the National Clinical Skills Competition. In 2002, the team of Brianna Hoffman and Teresa Mathwig tied for first place. “I feel this shows the quality of education our students are receiving at SDSU”, stated Kutscher.
