Funding Opportunities - SDSU

South Dakota State University
Office of Research & Sponsored Programs

Research/Scholarship Support Fund 2008

Purpose

Grants from the Research/Scholarship Support Fund (R/S SF) assist SDSU faculty in establishing research and scholarly projects that generate new knowledge and creativity in subject areas throughout the University. It is expected that Colleges and Departments will support R/S SF grant recipients on a cost matching basis (as close to 1:1 as possible), such as release time or other considerations to foster research and scholarly work. Grants are for a maximum of one year.

Objectives

• Aid faculty members in developing research/scholarship programs
• Support preliminary research that will lead to outside funding
• Support research and scholarly projects for which outside funding is not available

Eligibility & Exclusions

• Faculty members with the rank of instructor or above are eligible to submit proposals.
• Individuals will not be eligible for funding in two consecutive years.
• Only one application per Principal Investigator is allowed.
• Proposals mainly for the purchase of equipment will not be approved.
• Proposals to supplement an ongoing funded project are discouraged.
• Financing of theses or dissertations or thesis publication is not permitted.
• Funding for faculty salary support is discouraged. (A maximum of 1-2 weeks of summer salary will be considered.)
• Travel will be approved only to collect data or to use research tools not available on our campus.

Funding Categories

Category Budget Range Typical # of Awards
A $5,100 – 7,500 3
B $2,600 – 5,000 3
C $500 –2,500 5

Required Proposal Format (Original and 5 copies required)

A. Cover Sheet: Use the attached form.

B. Abstract: Summarize your project for a general audience. The essence and significance of your project must be understandable to a reader outside of your field. Do not exceed 250 words.

C. Narrative: This section must not exceed 4 pages. The text must be double-spaced and the font size must be no smaller than 12-point.

The narrative section must include the following headings:

• What do you plan to do and why is this project important?
• How does the proposal meet one or more of the Research/Scholarship Support Fund program objectives?
• What are the specific objectives (measurable outcomes) of this project?
• Where will the work be done and what facilities are available?
• What are the project design and the methods to be used? (These should relate directly to the objectives.)
• What is the project schedule? (Substantiate the feasibility of the project schedule. Grants are for a maximum of 1 year.)
• Will this project be a basis for external funding? Explain.

D. Literature Cited: Use only citations directly relevant to the proposed project.

E. Biographical Sketch for Principal Investigator: Provide a biographical sketch (maximum of 3 pages) which includes a list of past research/scholarship support (completed within the last 5 years) and current and pending external support, indicating the amount of funding, project period, and funding source. Also provide a selected list of publications relevant to the project.

F. Budget Summary: Provide budget figures by expense category and give a narrative explanation or justification. The budget requested must not exceed the limit for the funding category that you selected.

G. Appendices: Supporting materials necessary for the clarification of the narrative may be attached as appendices. Be judicious. Appended materials should be related specifically to the narrative.

H. Previous Funding from SDSU Research/Scholarship Support Fund: If you previously received funding from the R/S SF, then please attach a copy of the final report for the most recent award.

Criteria for Proposal Evaluation

Is the proposal clear and well organized?
Is the project feasible within a one-year period and with the budget proposed?
What are the relative scholarly/artistic merit and significance of the project?
Overall how is this proposal rated?
excellent (9-10), very good (7-8), good (5-6),
fair (3-4), or poor (1-2)

You will strengthen your proposal by showing genuine effort or commitment to seek external support. Acceptance of support from this fund carries an obligation to document some scholarly output (e.g., a proposal for additional outside funding, a manuscript for publication, or a report of how the project will impact future research efforts). Failure to do so will influence any future application(s) for support.

An original and 5 copies of your proposal must be submitted within the deadline.

Proposals must be received by: Monday, February 4, 2008 at 5:00 PM

Late proposals will not be considered. Proposals that do not meet eligibility requirements or that do not follow the required format will be disqualified.

Proposals should be submitted to:
Dr. John J. Ruffolo, Associate VP for Research
Box 2201, SAD 124
South Dakota State University
Brookings, SD 57007

Announcement of awards will occur in March 2008.

Operation of Funded Projects

Activity Accounts will be established in the name of the recipient for each grant. Grants are awarded to faculty members and should not be considered as departmental grants or general support accounts. All expenditures must be in compliance with current university regulations. Any unexpended funds will revert to the Research/Scholarship Support Fund unless otherwise authorized.

Duration of the Grant: The project should last no longer than one year following receipt of the award. Grant accounts will be closed after one year. Expenditures beyond the year will be disallowed unless a written request for an extension has been approved. Project period extensions are strictly limited to extraordinary circumstances. Unspent funding balance is not an acceptable justification.

Budget Flexibility: Any major change in the spending of the budget which could reflect changing the nature of the project should be justified to the Associate VP for Research for approval before expenditures are made.

Responsibility of the Grant Recipient: The grant recipient must submit a written final report within three months after the completion of the project. It should include a brief summary of outcomes. If applicable, the final report should be accompanied by a copy of an application for outside support. Grant recipients are expected to present a poster on their project at the annual day for Celebrating Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities at SDSU that follows completion of the project. Publications and presentations of project results should acknowledge support from the SDSU Research Support Fund.
