Requirements
The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship rewards incoming students who are South Dakota residents with up to $5000 in scholarship support. The full list of eligibility requirements can be found HERE
An eligible student may benefit from the program for up to four years as long as they continue to meet the requirements of the program.
To maintain eligibility for the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship, recipients must:
- Maintain a cumulative 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, calculated after the second semester and every semester thereafter.
- Complete consecutive spring and fall academic terms in order to remain eligible for continuation of scholarship from term to term. The scholarship does not apply to summer terms.
- Complete a minimum of 15 new credit hours of instruction per term.
- Sit for and meet, on the first attempt, the minimum passing scores established by the Board of Regents on all sections of the BOR college proficiency examination.
The following courses DO NOT count towards the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship
- Remedial Courses
- Repeated Courses
- Incomplete Courses
- Most Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Courses
Students who lose eligibility for the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship at SDSU will be notified.

Exemption Information
If a student loses eligibility for the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship at SDSU due to credit hours, the student may petition the executive director of the Board of Regents in writing to be excused from strict compliance with the administrative rules. If a student loses eligibility for the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship at SDSU due to low GPA, is able to improve their GPA to 3.0 or above, and wishes to be reconsidered for eligibility, they must print and fill out the scholarship reinstatement form and submit it to the address below. This form can be found HERE
