ADDITIONAL SUPPORTIVE SERVICES
The Office of Disability Services works in collaboration with several other programs on campus that provide additional supports to students.
TECHNOLOGY ACCESS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
The Office of Disability Services provides consultation for students, staff, and faculty with disabilities. Services include determining the functional limitations inherent to the persons disability, and how to overcome these limitations with the use of appropriate technology. Some of the services offered are:
- Instruction on how to use assistive hardware and software in the Adaptive Equipment Lab.
- Referral to service agencies within the state, which may be able to help with testing, financing, or acquiring hardware and software.
The Adaptive Equipment Lab in Room 115 of the H.M. Briggs Library was created to provide students who have a physical, perceptual, or learning disability, access to computer technology. If you are a student with a disability who could benefit from the lab, all it takes is a call from the coordinator of disability services and the library will add your name to their access list. Then you only need to stop at the circulation desk by the front door of the library and request the room be opened. Once you are finished in the lab please stop by the circulation desk and have them re-lock it.
ACADEMIC EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT OFFICE
The Academic Evaluation and Assessment Office (AEAO) (located in thte Old Foundation Building, 9th St. & Medary Ave; SDSU Box number 550) is available to students with disabilities who require additional time or testing in a Distraction and Noise-Free Environment. Accessible software and technology is also available in the AEAO. Students must call to reserve a specific time to test. Telephone: (605) 688-4499.
HEALTH SERVICES
The Office of Disability Services works closely with the Student Health Service Clinic. Health Services is located in West Hall, Room 212. Primary care is available when school is in session from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays (except holidays). Telephone: (605) 688-4157.
COUNSELING CENTER
The Counseling Center offers assessments and individual/group counseling for students. Assistance is available to help students develop positive coping skills and adjust to a post-secondary environment. The service is free to all students enrolled at South Dakota State University. MATH HELP CENTER

The SDSU Math Help Center provides free tutoring for students in these classes: MATH 021 Basic Algebra MATH 101 Intermediate Algebra MATH 102 College Algebra MATH 115 Precalculus MATH 120 Trigonometry MATH 121 Survey of Calculus MATH 123 Calculus I MATH 125 Calculus II STAT 281 Introduction to Statistics We hire tutors who have successfully completed Calculus II and who have shown an ability to be patient and communicate well. (In some instances, we will consider tutors with less coursework, if they can be scheduled to work with another tutor.) If you are interested in tutoring, please complete the application found below. We also request that you ask your most recent math teacher to contact Mrs. Hunter or Dr. Flint for a personal recommendation.
THE WRITING CENTER
The SDSU Writing Center, located on the second floor in the Wintrode Student Success Center, serves all students enrolled in the university, both graduate students and undergraduates. A student may come to the Writing Center for a weekly scheduled tutorial or may come on a drop-in basis.
Appointments are recommended but not required. To schedule an appointment call (605) 688-6559.
The Writing Center:
- Provides encouragement and advice.
- Helps students with all types of writing from brief assignments to research papers.
- Helps students understand the principles of grammar and punctuation.
- Works with students at any stage of the writing process.
- Builds students confidence as writers.
CAREER PLANNING and ACADEMIC CENTER
The Career and Academic Planning (CAP) Center provides academic, career, and employment information for SDSU students. The Center is located on the west side of campus in Medary Commons. The Center has specific information on all SDSU majors, career options, full and part-time jobs, companies that hire college graduates and other information related to finding a major and career.
Services include:
- Individual career and academic counseling.
- Career Resource Library-Many books available for checkout.
- Assessments (Strong Interest Inventory and CHOICES).
- Resume writing and interview skills assistance.
- Tutoring.
TRIO STUDENT SUPPORT PROGRAM
Mission Statement: SDSUs TRIO Student Support Services Program is designed to help university students achieve academic success. The ultimate goal of TRIO Student Support Services is to increase the number of students retained and who graduate from SDSU.
Eligibility Criteria: Do any of the statements listed below fit your family experience?
- I am a first generation student neither of my parents finished a 4-year college degree.
- I am an individual with a documented disability that impacts my ability to be successful in my academic program.
- I am in need of financial assistance to attend and be successful in college.
If you answered YES to any statement listed above, you may be eligible to be one of 150 students to participate in the SDSU TRIO Student Support Services Program.
Support Services Offered: To help you be successful at SDSU the following support services are available to you through the TRIO Student Support Services Program:
- Scholarship opportunities to help with college costs (minimum $300).
- Individualized support in managing your academic pursuits.
- Personalized financial, career, and social support services to ease transitions through college.
- Tutorial services in a variety of course areas, including math, English, and basic sciences.
- Referral assistance to other campus support services for students.
- Priority registration at the beginning of each academic semester.
Since services to students are individualized, your participation in the program may substantially increase your chances for success at SDSU.
