RandyBarrett10Randy is a broadcast journalism major. His SDSU activities include the Minority Peer Mentor Program, Campus Crusade for Christ, Brown Hall Welcoming Committee, the SDSU chapter of the Native American Journalists Association, and night assistant at Caldwell Hall. Last summer he was selected to participate in the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere (FLAME) program in Colorado Springs.

What drew you to the journalism program at SDSU?
My interest in journalism initially budded in high school, but what took hold for me about the program at SDSU was the amazing amount of kindness and help shown to me from the department staff. They showed me so much that I could do within journalism; I’m only compelled to stay in the program.

What’s your career goal?
My goal is to be an on-air reporter for a television news station. SDSU has many opportunities to get me started, like the campus radio station, KSDJ, and TV shows produced on campus.

What have been some of your favorite SDSU classes?
Basic Newswriting, Native American Religions, and Astronomy

What did the FLAME program involve?
30 other participants and I got to experience so many things. We stayed in the Olympic Training Center and toured the training compounds. We got to meet several Olympians like Derek Parra, the first Hispanic-American to win gold in the winter Olympics. We also had sessions on dinner etiquette, creating networks with people we know, and internship opportunities. It was a jam-packed three days of amazing activities, and I got to meet so many great people from around the U.S. from all backgrounds.
