Jane is a business economics major. Her SDSU activities include the swim team, Economics Club, Resident Assistant, treasurer for American Humanics (the organization for students interested in non-profit management), Staters for State (SDSUs student alumni association) vice president and Admissions Ambassador.
What is your career goal? Im interested in non-profit administration. Id like to obtain a joint masters degree in non-profit management and a law degree. Eventually, I want to work in philanthropy.
Whats one of your best college experiences so far? In September 2005 I had the opportunity to travel to China with a delegation from SDSU working to establish a study abroad program for students in Kunming, China. Without SDSU and the universitys belief that students should be involved at every level of decision-making, theres no way I would have been able to travel to a country like China. That trip opened my eyes to the opportunities available to students who want to study abroad and need to do it at a reasonable cost.
Whats one thing you never thought youd do before coming to SDSU? I never thought Id have the guts to study abroad alone. In the summer of 2005, I interned at a non-profit organization in Sevilla, Spain. I taught English classes to young girls during the day and took classes in the evenings. I really grew personally and matured a lot in a short amount of time as I learned to function completely independently.
Why is SDSU a good place to pursue your major? At first I was concerned about the economics-based education, because I thought I wanted a business administration degree. However, after spending some time in the real world through internships, I realized that the economics courses Ive taken have given me a solid foundation for the business world. I feel that Im better educated with a business economics degree, because I can open a Wall Street Journal and understand how the economic world impacts the business world. Without the economics background SDSU has given me, I would feel under-prepared for my future career in business.
Describe your summer 2006 internship in Washington, D.C. I worked for The Office of Government Relations in The Corporation for National and Community Service, which is a small federal agency that administers the AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve America programs. The Corporation is the nations largest grant-maker supporting service and volunteering. In addition to my responsibilities, I worked with three graduate students to produce a report analyzing the economic impacts of all our organizations service programs.
I also had access to some exclusive events like the arrival ceremony of Japans Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. It was neat to be on the South Lawn of the White House, only yards from so many strong political forces! |
