SDSU physics standout: Homestake project good for South Dakota

South Dakota’s universities, scientists and students all stand to benefit from a plan to build an underground science laboratory in the former Homestake Gold Mine.

 That’s the view of a standout from South Dakota State University’s physics program who has gone on to hold key positions with some major international physics projects.

“An underground laboratory has very attractive physics possibilities — neutrino physics, neutrino astrophysics, and searches for rare particles — all of which should tell us something about the fundamental structure of the universe,” said Gerald Blazey, who earned separate bachelor’s degrees in math and physics from SDSU in 1980.

SDSU research: Using flax against colon cancer

South Dakota State University studies are exploring the potential for flax to prevent and possibly even treat colon cancer.

Distinguished professor Chandradhar Dwivedi, head of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department in the College of Pharmacy at SDSU, said his work is funded partly by the North Dakota Oilseed Council.

National Agricultural Statistics Service figures show North Dakota was the nation’s leader in flax production in 2007 by a huge margin, followed by Montana, South Dakota, and Minnesota.

Dwivedi said while he was growing up in northeastern India, his family grew some flax.
