| Eligibility Requirements for Federal Financial Aid
| Students must meet the following requirements to receive federal financial aid. 1) A high school diploma or GED. 2) A valid Social Security Number. 3) Admittance as an SDSU degree seeking student (at least half-time to receive federal loans). 4) U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. If a student is here on a student visa (F1 or F2) or an exchange visitor visa (J1 or J2) he or she is classified as a noneligible noncitizen and does not qualify for federal financial aid. If you are considered a noneligible noncitizen, contact the International Student Affairs Office for more information regarding financial assistance. 5) Registeration with Selective Service--if you are a male between the ages of 18-24. 6) Once students receive financial aid they need to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined by SDSU.
In Addition 1) If the students meet the above requirements, please complete the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ), using SDSU's school code, 003471.
FAFSA applications must be completed for eligible enrolled students prior to the end of the specific academic term (i.e. May 11, 2007 for the 2006-07 academic year).
2) First-time Stafford loan borrowers must complete entrance loan counseling before they can receive Federal Financial Aid awards. They may pick up an entrance counseling form at the SDSU Financial Aid Office, or they may complete the process online counseling at mapping-your-future.org .

| The FAFSA Analysis: What it Means to Your Financial Aid
| All students who would like Federal Financial Aid must complete the FAFSA. The results of the FAFSA analysis will indicate an amount the student(and his or her parents, when applicable) can contribute to his or her college education. The difference between the estimated cost of attending SDSU (including tuition, fees, room and board, books, and personal expenses) and the expected family contribution equals a student's demonstrated financial need. Students who qualify for federal financial aid will then receive an award/resources letter outlining the specific kinds and amounts of aid they will receive. Students not eligible for subsidized federal financial aid can apply for unsubsidized financial aid (Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan and Federal PLUS Loan).
Some students would prefer not to use their parents' income when applying for federal financial aid. However, federal regulations require that parent resources must be used in determining a student's financial eligibility, unless the student is independent according to the federal definition. Generally, unmarried undergraduate students under 24 years of age must use their parents' information for federal financial aid consideration.
