Top Five Reasons To Choose SDSU

1. SDSU Graduates Get Excellent Jobs
Whether you plan to start your career immediately after graduation or continue your studies in graduate school, you'll find that your education at State has prepared you well. SDSU grads continue to be in high demand - and at highly competitive salaries! Over the last five years, the average placement rate at SDSU has been 95 percent, with placement in selected majors like pharmacy and engineering approaching 100 percent!

2. You'll Receive A Valuable Degree
A degree from SDSU carries 120 years of history - and a lot of weight among corporate recruiters and graduate schools. Each year nearly 200 companies come to campus to recruit our graduates, and they return year after year because of the quality of the graduates they have found here.

Upon your graduation from SDSU, you will become a part of a large and loyal family of alumni who can provide a valuable first contact in your job search. With more than 50,000 SDSU alumni all over the world, recent grads will find this network of "Staters" helpful. Here's a sampling of some of our alumni and what they're doing:
  • Erik Apland '88, music, White House pianist, "President's Own" Band
  • Senator Tom Daschle '69, political science, United States Senate Minority Leader
  • Kevin Gaustad '80, nursing, liver transplant coordinator, Mayo Clinic
  • Dana Haukoos '84, mechanical engineering, animation designer, Disney Studios
  • Sandy Johnson '78, journalism, chief, Associated Press Washington Bureau
  • Adam Timmerman '93, ag business, NFL player, St. Louis Rams
  • Adam Vinatieri '95, health, physical education & recreation; NFL player, Indianapolis Colts

  • 3. It's An Affordable Choice
While the quality of education is important to you as you consider the college that is right for you, we know cost can be an issue as well. Our costs are competitive with other less-comprehensive public universities and well below the costs of most private colleges - giving you an exceptional combination of quality and value for your education. We invite you to view the estimated cost for you to attend SDSU as an undergraduate student. With roughly 87% of current students receiving some type of financial aid, and an average financial aid award of $8,133 to students eligible for aid this past year, we do all that we can to make a great college education as affordable as possible. We also have a new Child of Alumni Tuition Rate! If one of your parents graduated from any public university in South Dakota, you could qualify. This rate took effect beginning with the Fall 2004 semester and applies to all new undergraduate students at SDSU. The rate is 150% of the undergraduate resident tuition rate

    4. You'll Have A Variety Of Academic Opportunities
Why wait until you graduate to travel overseas? SDSU's Office of International AffairsClick to view SDSU's Hyperlink Policy can help you to find summer, semester or year-long study abroad opportunities. Students can study abroad at one of the universities with which we have signed agreements; participate in study abroad options through the Modern Languages Department; or study in one of the 30 countries that participate in the College Consortium for International Studies.

If you want to stay a little closer to home but still explore a different area, you can participate in the National Student Exchange program. NSE students can travel to any one of the more than 150 exchange universities in the United States and study for either a semester or a year. This valuable program makes it possible and affordable to visit and study at another university as a part of your SDSU experience.

    5. It's The Perfect Size
State gives you the range of choices that only a comprehensive university can, and the personal attention you'd expect from a small college. We will offer the courses you'd need in order to graduate in four years. Our faculty are committed to student success, and with a 16-to-1 student to faculty ratio, you'll have the opportunity to get to know these great educators.

We also realize the college experience is about more than just what you'll learn in the classroom. At SDSU, the yearly calendar is packed with events that will let you test your skills and meet new people at every turn. Even with five classes, you can still find time to be a reporter for the student newspaper, work out at the racquetball courts, or act in a student production of Grease. With more than 200 student organizations found on our campus, you're sure to find a group that matches your interests. It's hard to be bored here!

The bottom line is that SDSU combines a commitment to academic excellence and a great variety of degree options to offer you an affordable education, equipping you well to be competitive in your career of choice.
