SDSU at a Glance
South Dakota State is a great place to be. The culture and landscape of SDSU is changing and changing dramatically. From a student enrollment surpassing 11,000 to the monumental move to Division I athletics, to the opening of the new Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence, SDSU continues to make faculty, staff, alumni and friends proud to be a Jackrabbit.

Academics
U.S. News and World Report ranks South Dakota State as a National Research Doctoral Granting Institution in its annual listing. The University earns more research funding than any university in South Dakota with research endeavors including some of the most exciting current work in aviation grade ethanol, renewable fuels, and wind power. SDSU students have extraordinary opportunities to engage in undergraduate research, both on campus and with the prestigious National Institutes of Health. And, the campus is home to numerous Fulbright winners among faculty and students, as well as Truman and Goldwater scholars.

Highlights
South Dakota State boasts the inventor of the first small gasoline engine, the developer of the Wang computer, a Nobel Prize winner, and the woman who made microwave technology a common kitchen appliance.

Graduates have excelled in numerous fields and have earned honors and positions of distinction including the Office of Governor and the Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate.

Recent Additions
Enrollment hasn’t been the only thing changing on campus. The University Student Union just completed a total renovation, now offering among other accoutrements student lounges complete with fireplaces, and wireless convenience throughout the building. New state-of-the-art residence halls have opened, a new dairy manufacturing facility is planned, as well as an equestrian center, and a new wellness facility.

Other facilities
SDSU is also home to the South Dakota Art Museum, the only fully accredited museum in the state to be recognized by the American Association of Museums. SDAM’s collections include early masterpieces of Sioux Indian Tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life, and an extensive collection of Oscar Howe and Paul Goble’s American Indian art. The exclusive Vera Way Marghab Linen Collection, the world’s largest complete collection, features nearly 3,000 pieces of exquisite hand-stitched linen.

The Performing Arts Center with its state-of-the-art Concert Hall with room for 1,000 and its 280-seat Studio Theatre, has become a bragging right not only of SDSU and Brookings, but, arguably the entire region.

The State Agricultural Heritage Museum on campus preserves the agrarian heritage of South Dakota while the seventy-acre McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum provide a beautiful setting for area residents and tourists to enjoy a stroll through one of the most beautiful small ornamental gardens in the nation.

Brookings
Brookings, South Dakota, home of South Dakota State University, is notably “Someplace Special.” A community of 18,500, the city offers a strong primary and secondary school system; a clean, safe environment; an active community theater; a new ice skating facility; and a family water park slated to open in May 2006.

Located in close proximity to Sioux Falls, the state’s largest city, Brookings is also a short drive from Minneapolis, Minnesota; Omaha, Nebraska; and Fargo, North Dakota. Brookings is home to a regional airport with daily flights to and from major cities.
