Jacks fall to Nebraska in NCAA Tournament

SDSU's volleyball season came to an end Nov. 30 in Lincoln, Neb., when the Jackrabbits ran into the defending national champion and second-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in front of a packed house of 4,189 fans.

The Huskers, who improve to 28-1, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 30-13, 30-14, 30-13 win. The Summit League champion Jackrabbits finished the season 25-11.

Friday's match ended the careers of Jackrabbit seniors Amy Anderson, Kristina Martin, Samantha Pearson and Mackenzie Osadchuk, but not before the made their marks in the SDSU record book.

Anderson leaves the program as the school's all-time leader in block assists with 422, and the single-season leader in block assists with 156 in 2007 (which broke her record of 133 in 2005).

She also holds the SDSU record for total blocks in a three and four-game match (both 10), along with The Summit League Tournament record 11 total blocks in a match and 21 total blocks in a tournament.

Martin's playing career ends with an SDSU best 1,765 kills to go along with her record 33 kills in a four-game match and record 36 kills in a five-game match. Martin also leaves as just the fifth player in SDSU history to record at least 1,000 kills and at least 1,000 digs (1,074).

In 2007 alone, Pearson broke the SDSU career digs mark with 1,929, single season digs mark with 718 and the single-match records for digs in a three, four and five game match with 28, 30 and 37 digs respectively.

In all, the 2007 Jackrabbits broke, or tied, 23 team or individual records.

Kristina Martin

Senior Kristina Martin, Hubertus, Wis., goes up for a block in Lincoln, Neb. Friday, Nov. 30, when the Jackrabbits lost to the defending national champion and second ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in front of a packed house of 4,189 fans at the historic NU Coliseum.

Silver bells, little tin drums, and Christmas jazz

The SDSU Percussion Ensemble and the South Dakota Jazz Orchestra will team up Dec 9 at 4 p.m. in the Larson Memorial Hall of the Performing Arts Center to welcome the holiday season with more than just silver bells for their 2007 Holiday Concert.

The Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Aaron Ragsdale, will open with traditional carols performed on a variety of typical and novel percussion instruments.

Some of the group's classic selections include "I Saw Three Ships," and arrangements from the television favorite, "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

Ragsdale, who recently completed his doctoral work at Rutgers University, is in his first year as a percussion instructor at SDSU.

The South Dakota Jazz Orchestra will follow with a big band version of a collection of seasonal tunes. "Away in a Manger," "God Rest Ye Merry Trombones," and "Christmas Time is Here," will be among the many numbers performed by some of South Dakota's best jazz musicians.

Corliss Johnson, a retired SDSU Music Department and faculty emeritus, directs the South Dakota Jazz Orchestra.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and are available at the door. Admission is free to children 12 and under. For more information, contact the Music Department, 688-5187.

Ag Museum book about essays on communities

The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum Press has released its first book, "Peril and Promise: Essays on Community in South Dakota and Beyond."

The 246-page volume is available in paperback in bookstores and from the museum gift shop for $15. The book includes writings by a dozen scholars affiliated with SDSU. It also contains poems by William Kloefkorn, Lydia Whirlwind Soldier, Darla Bielfieldt, Joe Paddock, Ruby Wilson, and Ted Kooser, former Poet Laureate of the United States. Twenty-six photographs and an annotated bibliography round out the book.

Work on the project originated several years ago with the discussions of a group of scholars from several academic disciplines, ranging from English, history and sociology to political science, biology, and education. After reading and discussing Robert Putnam’s best-selling book, "Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community," the group decided to write essays of their own on the subject of statewide and regional perspectives. Eventually scholars from philosophy, counseling, and Indian studies joined the project.

Peril & Promise Authors

Authors, editors, and publishers of Peril and Promise include (back row from left) John Miller, Nels Granholm; (middle) Chuck Woodard, Mary Haug, MaryJo Benton Lee, Del Lonowski; (front) Larry Rogers, Ruby Wilson, Ruth Harper, and Darla Bielfeldt. The collection includes seven other writers.
