Film on peak oil and the Cuban experience to be shown
A free public screening of The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil will be shown Feb. 20 in Rotunda C at 6 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by the Office of International Affairs and Project Sustainability.
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. The film describes hardships and struggles as well as community and creativity of Cuban people during that time.
Natives share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming, and local and urban gardens with an emphasis on permaculture.
The films director, Faith Morgan, made two trips to Cuba in 2003 to study what happened after the USSR collapsed and Cubas oil subsidies were cut in half.
In 2004 she returned as part of the film crew that documented the story of social disaster and Cubas creative response to living without cheap, abundant oil.
The film was the recipient of the People's Choice Award for Best International Film at the Aotearoa Environmental Film Festival in 2006.
For more information, contact Karl Schmidt, 688-4913.
Film director, co-producer and co-writer Faith Morgan helped plan and implement the first three U.S. conferences on Peak Oil and Community Solutions.

Campus Kudos
The SDSU family congratulates the following people for their outstanding contributions on and off campus:
Jacobson named February Employee of the Month
Carol Jacobson, word processor in the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, has been named the February Career Service Employee of the Month.
Letters of support used words like intelligent, pays attention to detail, and extreme dedication to describe Jacobson.
Department Head David Willis cited Jacobsons initiative to monitor and cross-check lists of students receiving scholarships and awards as an example of her value to the department and to SDSU. Because of her independent initiative and concern, several more of our students received scholarships this year, he said.
Students also wrote a letter of support saying she can be an unsung hero working late hours during busy times and taking time to help organize materials for wildlife and fisheries students to take part in summer field research.
Jacobson has been married for 37 years and moved with her husband from California to his hometown of Arlington in 2001. Her daughter, son-in-law and their three boys also live in Arlington. Her son, daughter-in-law and their three children live in a suburb of Chicago.
A reception for Carol Jacobson was held this morning in the Northern Plains Biostress Lab. Congratulations can be sent to her by campus e-mail.
Reception to honor Meyers for years of service
Jarrod Jay Meyers, after seven years of service as the operations manager at The Union and Performing Arts Center, is leaving his position.
A reception will be held to honor his years of service Feb. 14 at 3:30 p.m. in the Crazy Horse Lounge, room 299, at The Union.
For more information, contact Mona Tunender, 688-4960.
Meat judging team takes first place in two national events
The SDSU Meat Judging team won the National Western Livestock Show Meat Judging contest in Greeley, Colo. Jan 20 before a group of 71 judges from nine universities.
Less than a month later, the team also took first in the Southestern Intercollegiate Meat Judging contest in Fort Worth, Texas Feb. 2.
Teams from SDSU have competed in the National Western event for 23 years and in the Texas competition 36 times.
The team will continue to meet regularly until their next contest, which takes place in Pennsylvania next September.
The 2008 team is coached by Dustin Mohrhauser and assistant coach Sarah Wells, both meat science graduate assistants. Duane Wulf is the faculty advisor.
The meat judging team includes, from left, Jace Hollenbeck, Tyler Radke, Eric Hogle, Katelyn Milton, Robbie Helberg, Amanda Nolz, Tyler Urban, coach Dustin Mohrhauser and assistant coach Sarah Wells.
Students connect to Brookings through photo research
SDSU photojournalism students spent time last fall researching buildings in Brookings and documenting their history with past and current photographs.
I wanted students to understand the importance of research in journalism, said Frank Klock, assistant professor of journalism and mass communication. I also wanted the students to appreciate the community where they currently reside.
Klock and Brookings Register publisher Billie McMacken collaborated on a 15-day series run in the daily paper that featured old and new photo images along with brief text describing the history of the site.
Students began research with help from curators and historians at the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum, Briggs library, Brookings government, and resident historians. The series started running Jan. 28 and will conclude Feb. 13.
Members of Frank Klocks fall 2007 photojournalism class review photos used for a class project on the history of buildings in Brookings with Dawn Stephens, Agricultural Heritage Museum curator. Pictured from left are Haley Sjomeling, Pollack; Adam Jungemann, Wolsey; Klock; Stephanie Froiland, Parker; and Stephens.
