Publication Services
Headed by Andrea Kieckhefer, the University publications editor, this department within University Relations manages all official University publications. Graphic designers provide creative illustrative services for campus colleges, departments and administrative units, while writers are the wordsmiths of the stories.
Printing projects utilizing the University’s name and/or logos should have approval from University Relations before the project is finalized. Publication Services is responsible for the University Graphic Identity manual and monitoring the use of University logos.
As noted earlier, the Ag Bio Unit within the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences handles publications for the Agricultural Experiment Station and the Cooperative Extension Service.
There are several graphic designers within the publications area to assist with design recommendations, printing estimates, paper selection, printing recommendations, and other issues related to print projects.

Before a publication project is designed it needs to be written. In many cases University colleges or departments submit the text for the project to University Relations – requiring only design services, editing, and proofing. In some instances, such as college magazines and newsletters; STATE magazine for the SDSU Alumni Association; Calling Home, a magazine for parents; and projects for the SDSU Foundation, University Relations writers and editors will compile the copy and coordinate the publication.
Unless a project falls in one of the areas mentioned above, the department is responsible for providing the copy for projects.
