Projects that Do Not Require Prior Approval if done by OBSERVATION
  • Is there a pattern to deer/car accidents along I29 or I 90 stretch? Get friends who commute every day to ID where carcasses are found for 1 to 2 years. Figure out where deer are killed and what precipitated the accident i.e., shelter belt, water way,ect.
  • What animals are eating food raised in Feed Plots (corn raised and not harvested)? Usage versus where plot is located. Measure bird tracks in a square area. No animal contact is involved.
  • What habitats are favored by song birds? Shelter belt or space in middle of town or old growth vs. new growth trees?
  • Conservation projects to save our threatened prairies, wetlands, buffalo; ecosystem restoration (prairies, wetlands, etc.), air/water/soil quality issues as they relate to or impact biodiversity
  • Pop cans vs. beer cans along highway; check daily for a week or month.

  • How often do kids eat fast foods (per month or week) and what fast foods do they like?
  • What do kids eat for breakfast and where do they eat?
  • Vegetarians vs. carnivores, rural vs. urban towns.
  • What can be done to remove the odor from pig or cow manure?
  • How many extra-curricular activities are students involved in ( by grade or gender or working parents )?
  • How many hours do students spend studying vs participating in extra-curricular activities?
  • How much milk are students drinking vs soda vs sport drinks vs water vs other fluids by gender and/or grade
  • Has the use of ear plugs and volume of music affected the hearing of teenagers?
  • How many hours do students spend on the computer? What percentage is for studies, fun, surfing the net, doing homework, chat rooms, emailing, ect.?
  • What do sudents spend their money on? How many students receive an allowance?
  • What types of chores do sudents do to get an allowance? How many hours do they work?
  • How many hours do students spend watching TV, working on the computer (sedentary activities)? How many hours do they exercise (physical activities)?
  • How many students are involved in communtiy service activities? How many hours? What types of activities? What started their involvement?
  • Using hospital or medical clinic records or State Health Dept., comparison of blood cholesterol levels of young children in SD over the last 10 years or over the period that fast food has been a large part of diet(s).
  • Use of cell phones by drivers in cars
  • Types of driver distractions, e.g., eating or drinking, fiddling with radio,cell phones, talking, etc.
  • How much of the school's lunch or breakfast is eaten by boys vs. girls?
