Eastern South Dakota Science & Engineering Fair Awards and Prizes

These are some of the awards and prizes which will be given away at the 2009 Eastern South Dakota Science and Engineering Fair (ESDSEF) at SDSU.

American Society of Metals International Foundation++	Medallion and a Certificate	Best materials engineering project; use of materials-related concepts; demonstration of some aspect of materials paradigm, clarity in presentation, understanding of scientific method, aesthetics of project
Daktronics++	(2) $250 awards	Grand Prize Individual winners
Discovery Young Scientist Challenge	Chance to win a $50,000 Savings Bond, trips, prizes	Open to any 5th-8th grade student. Submit a video (1-2 min) to www.discoveryeducation.com/youngscientist between Mar 1 and June 15, 2009. Science Fair winners go straight to quarterfinals if video meets rules.

INTEL Excellence in Computer Science++	$200 cash, Intel Certificate	For grades 9-12; Best Computer Science project
Midwest Chapter of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry++	$100 cash prize	Related to clinical chemistry
MU Alpha Theta++	Certificate	Most challenging, original, thorough, and creative investigation of a problem involving math accessible to a High School student(senior division). Does not have to be in math category
National Society of Professional Engineers++	Certificate and lapel pin	Most outstanding engineering project; grades 7-12
National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration++	certificate & medallion	Emphasizes NOAA's mission to understand and predict changes in Earth's environment and conserve and manage coastal and marine resources
Phil Bjordahl Memorial Environmental Award++	$50 cash	Best water, soil or tree conservation project

Society for In Vitro Biology++	Certificate	Most outstanding 11th grade student exhibiting in the areas of plant or animal in vitro biology or tissue culture.
Society for Science & the Public++	(27) letters of invitation to compete for scholarships, trips and prizes	For grades 6-8; 1st prize winners of 12 junior division categories; some 2nd place winners

U.S. Metric Association++	certificate	For exhibits using quantitative measurement and which best uses the SI metric system for measurement; senior division only
U.S. Public Health Service++	Certificate signed by the USPHS Surgeon General	Projects which creatively illustrate and expand upon following statements: (a) Regular physical activity is important for maintaining good health; (b) A healthy diet is key to maintaining a healthy weight and having a long healthy life; (c) Tobacco use is hazardous to your health; (d) Injury and illness prevention saves lives; and (e) Alcohol remains the most heavily abused substance by American's youth.
U.S. Navy & Marine Corps++	(4)$50 gift certificates, medals and certificates for senior div; (5) medals and certificates for junior div	Senior Division; demonstrate abilities in the sciences; convey dedication, creativity, and enthusiasm for continuing interests in the sciences or engineering
