Honors College Student Organization

The Honors College Student Organization provides opportunities for honor students to interact with other honor students in social settings. The HCSO allows honor students to get to know one another outside the classroom. In so doing, students can form study groups with fellow honor students and develop long-lasting friendships. The HCSO also provides opportunities for community service activities as well as leadership experience. The HCSO is an excellent way for students to get more involved with the Honors College and South Dakota State University.

HCSO History

The Honors College Student Organization was founded in the fall of 1999. At that time, it was not recognized as an official student organization.

In the fall of 2000, Matt Diischer and Josh Onken, founders of the HCSO, began the process of getting the HCSO recognized as an official student organization at SDSU. The process was completed by the middle of the Spring 2001 semester.

With the HCSO a recognized student organization, work began on recruitment of members and the implementation of programs to benefit Honors College students. Because of the efforts of many dedicated, hard-working students, the HCSO has prospered and has grown into an organization that not only helps honors students come together, but also helps the university and community.

Events and Activities

One of the most successful events the HCSO takes part in is Hobo Week. Two of the more popular activities that take place are "Paint the Town" and the Hobo Day Parade.

"Paint the Town" is an event in which student organizations paint the windows of local business to raise money for their Hobo Day Parade floats.

The Hobo Day Parade takes place on the Saturday of Hobo Week right before the football game. The parade is an excellent opportunity to student organizations to show off their school spirit to the community, alumni, and visitors whocome to SDSU to back the Jacks.

Below are pictures from both "Paint the Town" and the Hobo Day Parade.

The following pictures are from Hobo Week 2003.
