Honors General Education Course Guidelines

Department courses included in the list of both system and university general education offerings may be offered as Honors sections with unique content and teaching strategies appropriate for Honors students. Students must complete 15 credit hours of Honors general education and satisfy other requirements to graduate with Honors College Distinction. Course content will include the basic elements or principles students need when these courses are prerequisites for future classes, but will be enriched and taught in manners that appeal to and challenge Honors students. These students are those who enter SDSU in the upper 10% of their high school graduating classes or who have ACT scores of 27 or above. It is expected that Honors students will be:

* highly motivated students
* willing to take risks
* creative thinkers
* personally responsible for their own progress and achievements
* flexible, eager to engage in non-traditional teaching approaches
* desirous of enrichment opportunities that go beyond the norm

General education sections designated as Honors sections are designed to appeal to the special abilities of these highly capable students. The emphasis in planning and conducting an Honors section should not be more reading and/or writing than in regular sections, but in:

* the special techniques used to present information and stimulate participation
  among the members of a comparatively-small group
* the personal involvement of talented students in developing and monitoring
  outcomes
* problem solving and critical thinking
* group activities
* opportunities to practice and enhance communication skills
* enrichment activities outside the classroom that are required and incorporated
  into course content/class interaction

To facilitate the type of class activity/involvement envisions, characteristics of Honors sections include the following:

* Recommended enrollment of 15-20
* Maximum class size of 25

Departments wishing to have a general education course designated as Honors should complete the required form (which can be downloaded from the "Forms and Documents"Click to view SDSU's Hyperlink Policy page of this site) and include a course description/syllabus with an explanation of how course content and teaching techniques make the course distinctively different from the regularly offered sections.

Before offering an Honors section of a general education course, the course offering must be approved by the Honors College Committee. Requests should be submitted to the Honors College Committee chairperson, who will bring the request to the committee's agenda. Departments will then be notified of the action taken by the committee.
