Mary Robinson: Former President of Ireland

Mary Robinson, who has spent most of her life as a human rights advocate, served as the first women president of Ireland, from 1990-1997. United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan nominated her as United Nations High Commisioner for Human Rights, a position she held from 1997 to 2002. She is currently based in New York, where she leads the Ethical Globalization Institute, which is working to bring the norms and standards of human rights into the globalization process and to support capacity building in good governance in developing countires, with an initial focus on Africa.
