Student Health & Counseling Services

The mission of South Dakota State University Student Health and Counseling Services is to promote the health and wellness of the university community, to enhance student retention, and to support academic and personal success of all students.

FAQs

1.  What services are available at Student Health?

Student Health and Counseling Services offers quality, accessible and affordable health care to all SDSU students and their families. These services include:

  • Illness/Injury Treatment
  • Routine Physical Exams
  • School, Sport/Athletic & ICC Exams
  • Well Baby/Child Exams
  • Women's Gynecological Exams
  • STI Testing (including HIV)
  • Pregnancy Testing & Contraception
  • Immunizations
  • Travel Health

Services also include support for healthy lifestyles and personal wellness along with help to those with eating disorders. Counseling and pharmacy services are also available. Counseling services include:

  • Adjustment/Transition Issues
  • Relationship Issues
  • Alcohol/Chemical Dependency
  • Stress Management
  • Anxiety/Depression

2.  As a student at SDSU, am I eligible for health insurance?

Both domestic and international students may be eligible for health insurance:

·       Domestic students 

All domestic students taking 5 or more credit hours (3 hours in summer), all domestic graduate student taking credit hours, and students seeking a doctorate degree are eligible to enroll with UnitedHealthcare, a company specializing in student health insurance plans. Eligible domestic students who do enroll may also insure their dependents per eligibility guidelines.

·       International Students 

All registered international students taking credit hours and their dependents are required to purchase health insurance through UnitedHealthcare, a company specializing in student health insurance plans, at the time of registration.

3.  What are the office hours for health services?

Regular Hours:
   Monday through Friday
   8:00 am to 5:00 pm

Summer & Academic breaks:
   Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
   8:30 am to 12:30 pm

Late Health Appointment Policy effective May 14, 2007: Students who are more than 10 minutes late for their scheduled appointments will have to reschedule for a future time. The effects of students being late causes other scheduled appointments to be delayed. To remedy this, it is recommended that students arrive 10 to 15 minutes prior to their scheduled appointment.
Note: This only applies to the health department.

5.  Can I get medications from Student Health Service? 

Yes, pharmacy services are available at the following times:

   Monday through Friday
  
9:30 am to 12:00 pm 
   1:30 pm to 5:00 pm

Summer & Academic breaks:
   Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 
   9:00 am to 1:00 pm

6. What if I'm sick and Student Health Services is closed?

If you need medical attention outside of Student Health Services hours, you may go to one of the following:

  • Avera Brookings Medical Center; located at 400 22nd Avenue in Brookings; phone 605.697.9500; open M - F, 8 - 5 pm; also offers acute care for walk-ins from 8:30 -11:00 am on Saturdays.
  • Sanford Clinic - located at 922 22nd Avenue (in the University Mall); phone 605.697.1900; open M- F, 8 am - 5:00 pm.
  • Brookings Health System emergency room (formerly, the Brookings Hospital); phone 605.696.9000; located at 300 22nd Avenue.

Your insurance company may need to be notified in order for your visit (or certain procedures) to be covered off-campus - contact your insurance company directly with any questions you may have regarding coverage.
