 Environmental Health & Safety

The primary function of the Environmental Health & Safety office is to assist campus personnel in making SDSU a safe learning and working environment for faculty, staff, and students.

This site provides links to information on laboratory safety (including how to get a laboratory safety kit and what’s in it), indoor air concerns, radiation safety, recycling, biosafety, and chemical safety.

FAQs

1.  I need to find emergency operation plans and SDSU’s policies and procedures on all kinds of EHS topics – where do I find this information?

South Dakota State University’s manual Emergency Operating Plan contains the current procedures, notifications and other information concerning SDSU operations during emergencies and can be viewed at: Emergency Operation Plans Procedures website

This site also provides links to

  • SDSU’s "Respiratory Safety Program"
  • SDSU's "Blood Borne Pathogen Policy and Procedures"
  • The State of South Dakota's "Risk Management's Blood Borne Pathogen Guidelines"

2.  Where do I go if I need to get rid of laboratory waste?

The responsible individual for the lab or work area needs to ensure that the lab/work area is registered with the Environmental Health & Safety office prior to any waste being picked up.  It takes less than 7 minutes to register.  Do this by going to
http://ehs.sdstate.edu and then using the link "register lab work area."  All this must be done from an SDSU computer because it is a secure site.

3.  What’s being done at SDSU regarding the Avian Flu & what can I do to stay healthy?

SDSU is in the planning stages in case of an Avian Flu Pandemic. The primary avian flu virus (H5N1 avian virus) has not been found in the United States and that there is not a pandemic or epidemic flu anywhere. Also remember that the primary virus cannot be transmitted from human to human.
