Some results from the SDRBH Study

General results:

> Rural men and women have greater bone mass and size than non-rural men and women.

> Individuals with greater activity levels and greater grip strength have better bones.

> Forty randomly chosen blood samples were tested for Vitamin D, and a deficient amount of this vitamin was found in 86% of the samples. More samples are now being analyzed to see what the connection might be between this vitamin and bone health.

Sleep and bone health:

> Men who sleep less than 6.5 hours each night have smaller, thinner, weaker bones than men who sleep more.

> Women who sleep less than 6.5 hours a night have lower bone density than women who sleep more.

Breast-feeding and bone health:

> Bone density decreases during breast-feeding and is regained during weaning.

> The more children a woman breastfeeds, the larger her bones become. This does not necessarily mean more bone density, however.

> No difference in bone density is found later between women who breastfed their children and those who didn't.
