In November of 2006, South Dakota State University (SDSU) was named to lead the National Children’s Study site located in Brookings Co., SD, and 3 counties in MN: Yellow Medicine, Pipestone and Lincoln (i.e., BYPL site). The Children's Health Act of 2000 authorized the NCS, which plans to examine the long-term effects of environmental influences on the health and development of more than 100,000 children across the US.

Some interesting facts about the National Children's Study include:
* 105 sites will be used to collect data; sites are located in rural, urban, and suburban areas.
* 100,000 participants will be followed from before birth until age 21.
* Environmental factors to be studied include: natural and man-made environments, biological, chemical, physical and social factors, behavior, genetics, culture, family and geographic location.

Data from the
NCS will form the basis of future government actions on child health interventions and policy.

We have developed a community health questionnaire to better assess the needs of the areas that the NCS will cover.  We would greatly value your input on this short survey!!

COMMUNITY HEALTH SURVEY

The National Children's Study will take place at 105 sites in the U.S. Most of the sites gave been chosen now and their locations are shown on this map. The sites cover a variety of locations: rural, urban, and suburban. The Vanguard Centers, the sites that will start the research first, are named here, along with the local site.

At the SDSU site, the NCS study will take place in 4 counties: Brookings County in SD, and the Minnesota counties of Yellow Medicine, Pipestone, and Lincoln. Those counties are highlighted on this map.

Since the NCS BYPL contract was awarded to SDSU in November 2005, the team of researchers at SDSU, the University of Cincinnati, & Cincinnati Children's Hospital & Medical Center has been working with the Study's Program Office to develop the study hypotheses and research plan. This has included many collaborative meetings and discussions to gather expertise and experience necessary for study development.

The timeline of events past and future is shown here. Note that recruiting participants will begin in the fall of 2008.
