Dr. Joan McGowanDr. Joan McGowan, Director of the Musculoskeletal Diseases Branch at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), leads a program of research on orthopaedics, osteoarthritis, bioengineering, basic bone and muscle biology and related diseases including osteoporosis and the muscular dystrophies.  Dr. McGowan was the EA Martin Distinguished Lecturer for the 24th Annual Nutrition Seminar in March 2007 and presented “Trials and Tribulations:  Lessons Learned from the NIH Women’s Health Initiative” and “Calcium and Vitamins:  Do we have enough evidence for action.”

Dr. Alan Fleishman

2007               Dr. Alan Fleischman, an internationally recognized ethicist, visited SDSU on January 25th, 2007.  Dr. Fleischman is Senior Advisor to The New York Academy of Medicine and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Clinical Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He is also Chairman of the Federal Advisory Committee and Ethics Advisor to the National Children's Study at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Washington, D.C.  While here, Dr. Fleischman presented a lecture on “Regulating Research Involving Human Subjects--Is the System Broken?”

                  James Painter, PhD, Chair, School of Family and Consumer Sciences, Eastern Illinois University, "Food Psychology:  Why we eat more than we think", SDSU 24th Annual Nutrition Seminar 





2006         Dr. Louis Grivetti, a food historian from the University of California, Davis, and a personal friend to Dr. Ethel Austin Martin, visited SDSU from October 24-29th, 2006.  During his stay, Dr. Grivetti participated in a local radio show, presented six lectures, and attended the Hobo Day festivities including the parade, tailgating, the football game and a women's hockey game.

Dr. Grivetti presented six different lectures during his stay at SDSU.


                  Dr. Robert Rucker, professor and chair at UC Davis’s Department of Nutrition and nutritionist in the Agricultural Experiment Station, visited SDSU from October 26-29th, 2006.  Like Dr. Grivetti, he also presented a lecture while on campus and attended SDSU’s Hobo Day activities.
