In November of 2005, South Dakota State University (SDSU) was named to lead the National Childrens Study (NCS) site located in Brookings Co., SD, and 3 counties in MN: Yellow Medicine, Pipestone and Lincoln (i.e., BYPL site). The Children's Health Act of 2000 authorized the NCS, which plans to examine the long-term effects of environmental influences on the health and development of more than 100,000 children across the US (105 sites) following them from before birth until age 21. Environment is broadly defined to include: natural and man-made environments, biological, chemical, physical and social factors, behavior, genetics, culture, family and geographic location. The NCS will form the basis of future child health guidance, interventions and policy.
