Pre-Pharmacy Program
The Curriculum is divided into a 2-year pre-pharmacy (66 credits) and a 4-year professional program phase (152 credits). The pre-pharmacy curriculum (download below) provides a solid knowledge base and ability to use critical thought process in the biological and physical sciences. It also includes about 30 credits of communication courses, humanities, social sciences and other general education courses.
In high school the student should take an academic curriculum in preparation for entrance to college. A sound basic education in science and mathematics courses is an essential part of preparation for the study of pharmacy. Good written and oral communication skills are important.
Students may be admitted as freshman, or transfer into the pre-pharmacy or professional program depending upon the courses completed. Students planning to transfer from another college or university should consult with the College of Pharmacy early in their academic careers to plan course work that will transfer as satisfying the pre-pharmacy requirements. Numerous transfer equivalencies have been established for courses from many colleges and universities. To determine if your course or courses will transfer as equivalent to specific SDSU courses, please click here [External Hyperlink].
All students (SDSU or transfer) seeking admission to the professional program must submit an application. Go to the Admission to the Pharm.D. Program page for information on how to apply. Students are admitted only for the Fall semester and the deadline for applying for admission is February 1 of that year. Students are notified of their acceptance into the professional program during the Spring semester. A non-refundable pharmacy major fee (approximately $600) is required of all students invited to enter the professional program in order to secure their position for the Fall semester. Also, students accepted into the program must pass a criminal background check as directed by the College before acceptance is confirmed.
