In an effort to keep the spotlight on the nursing shortage and keep the public informed that nursing is a viable career, the College of Nursing at South Dakota State University began sponsoring a contest entitled, "Why I Want to be a Nurse" in 2002. All children attending fifth grade in South Dakota are invited to submit a 150-word email essay answering the question, "Why I Want to be a Nurse." With South Dakota being identified as the "most wired State", an email submission will support the use of technology in the schools and provide children with an opportunity to fine-tune their writing skills.
The contest sponsored by the College of Nursing at SDSU is the rebirth of a 1951 contest sponsored by Curity (Bauer & Black, a Division of the Kendall Company). Miss Curity was to be someone who demonstrated the ideals of the American Nurse and Kay Hobbie, who was the College of Nursing Lab Coordinator until her retirement in Spring 2003, won this contest. The College of Nursing is sponsoring this contest in conjunction with National Nurses Week. National Nurses Week is supported by the American Nurses Association (ANA).
National Nurses Week (May 6 through May 12)
To address the nursing shortage, Johnson & Johnson developed a nationwide campaign in support of the nursing profession. They are working with health care leaders and nursing organizations in an effort to bring more people into nursing, develop more nurse educators, and retain the talent already in the profession.
Johnson & Johnson: The Campaign for Nursing's Future
In 2005, Johnson & Johnson has launched The Nursing Gang to spark interest in the nursing profession by using an animated groug of pre-teens. The website is loaded with games, nursing trivia, and many other terrific features.
