Disclaimers


The College of Nursing utilizes scholarship money to support Jackrabbit Guarantees. Scholarship money is divided between fall and spring semester.  If a recipient graduates in December, he/she will receive all of the scholarship money in the fall semester.


JACKRABBIT GUARANTEE

The Jackrabbit Guarantee promises a minimum of $1,000 per year in scholarship assistance, renewable for a total of four years (applications must be submitted yearly). This guarantee is available to all new first-time freshman students who score a 24 or higher on the ACT, a standardized college preparation examination. It is renewable for up to four years provided the student averages 30 credits each academic year and maintains a 2.5 or higher GPA at SDSU.

FINANCIAL AID

Financial aid is awarded through the Financial Aid Office. The student should contact the Financial Aid Office at 605-688-4695 for up-to-date information or surf to the SDSU Financial Aid Office webpage.


The Dakota Corps Scholarship ($4,500 per year) is available for eligible students as noted in "Areas of Critical Need" with appropriate academic standing. Each recipient promises to enter a critical need occupation in South Dakota following completion of the program.  Applications are available at the Financial Aid Office.

The American Legion: Eight and Forty Scholarship
The Eight and Forty Lung and Respiratory Disease Nursing Scholarship was established to assist Registered Nurses, desiring to obtain advanced training. Awards are made on the basis of personal and academic qualifications with consideration given to past experience and future employment plans as they relate to pediatric lung and respiratory disease nursing. 2006 Tylenol Scholarships
Tylenol  will be giving out (150) $1,000 scholarships and (10) $10,000 scholarships available. Students in any healthcare-related program of study may apply (high school going to college, undergraduates in various fields, nursing students, medical students, etc.). 2006 March of Dimes Graduate Nursing Scholarship
Qualified scholarship applicants are registered nurses currently enrolled in a graduate program in maternal-child nursing at the master's or doctorate level with at least one academic term to complete after May 2006. This is a $5000 scholarship to recognize and promote excellence in nursing care of mothers and infants. Scholarship applications must be received via email. South Dakota Nurses Foundation
A new nursing education scholarship has been announced by the South Dakota Nurses Foundation (SDNF). A single $500 scholarship will be given to support a nurse pursuing a master's or doctoral degree with the career goal of teaching in a baccalaureate or higher nursing education program or providing direct patient care in a high need area. The Richard Hagen-Minerva Harvey Memorial Scholarship
Description: The Richard Hagen-Minerva Harvey Memorial Scholarship is a South Dakota State Scholarship program for enrolled members of American Indian Tribes whose reservation is located in whole or part in the State of South Dakota. Once approved recipients will be authorized to receive up to four years of funding depending on year of attendance. Funds are to be used for students attending a public or non-public accredited university, college or technical institute located in South Dakota. Up to seven scholarships may be awarded each year. Annual scholarship award amounts include a minimum of $1,000 for the first two years of attendance, a minimum of $1,500 for the third year of attendance, and a minimum of $2,500 for the fourth year of attendance.Students must maintain a cumulative 2.5 grade point average during the course of the scholarship period. Students interested may obtain additional information from the Nursing Student Service office or by contacting the South Dakota Board of Regents, 306 East Capitol Avenue, Suite 200, Pierrs, SD 57501.

Indian Health Service Award 112: The Wokunze Project
Description: The Wokunze Project is funded by the Indian Health Service under Section 112 of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, as amended. This project provides scholarship for qualified individuals to pursue full time study in a program leading towards a baccalaureate degree in nursing at South Dakota State University. Scholarships cover tuitition and fees, books, and other reasonable educational expenses, and a stipend of $1,250 per month. Scholarships are awarded annually on a competitive basis and may be renewed depending on the academic progress and the availability of continued funding.

PRE-NURSING STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS


Arnold Megard Memorial Scholarship
Criteria: Recipient of this scholarship shall be a Health Professional Learning Community student going into his/her sophomore year. Preference shall be given to those involved in SDSU student activities. The recipient of this scholarship shall also have completed high school with a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

Florence L (Hines) Peterka Memorial Scholarship
Criteria: A well-rounded high school graduate from the Hand or Hyde county area with an interest in the field of nursing. Should have at least a 3.0 cumulative high school GPA, involvement in extra-curricular and social activities, and religious faith. Has high financial need.

Nellie McLoughlin Scholarship
Criteria: Recipient will be a non-traditional student (any grade level) and only if other qualifications being equal, an applicant from Hand, Hanson, or Davison counties is to receive preference.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND LOANS

Nursing scholarships are awarded through the College of Nursing to nursing students in the Major. Scholarship applications for Scholarships awarded through SDSU are available at the University Financial Aid office or the Student Services office in Rapid City. Students should complete and return scholarship and financial aid applications to the Financial Aid office. Amounts and numbers of scholarships vary from year to year.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR NURSING STUDENTS IN THE MAJOR

Evelyn Krueger Jones Scholarship
Criteria: The fund's first priority is providing significant scholarship support to students in the Madison area who are:
1. High school graduates who wish to earn a B.S. in Nursing at SDSU.
2. Registered nurses employed at the Madison Hospital, or the Bethel Nursing Home or the Beverly Long Term Care Center who want to earn a B.S. or M.S. in Nursing at SDSU.
3. Those intending to return to the Lake County area to work will be given preference for the Evelyn Krueger Jones Scholarship.
4. Scholarships are renewal but applications but be submitted yearly

Lynda's Uniforms - AACN Scholarship Seeks New Applicants

Lydia
's Professional Uniforms, a leading supplier of apparel for health professionals, is partnering with AACN to offer a scholarship program for nurses enrolled in baccalaureate programs. Through this partnership, Lydia's will provide $10,000 in competitive scholarship monies to eligible nursing students in the 2005-2006 academic year. Titled the Excellence in Academics Nursing Scholarship, this program provides scholarships to nursing students in their junior year of an accredited BSN program. Two scholarships in the amount of $2,500 will be distributed in the Fall and Spring semesters with deadlines set for July 1 and November 1, respectively. To qualify, students must possess a GPA of 3.5 or better, complete the required application form, and submit a 250 word essay describing their career aspirations and financial need. Express PersonnelScholarship
Criteria: Student shall be a senior nursing student in the accelerated nursing program at SDSU, who will seek employment in eastern South Dakota upon graduation.


University Scholarships
Nursing majors eligible. Scholarships are allotted to each college on the basis of enrollment. They are based on scholarship, leadership, character, and need.

F. O. Butler Scholarship

Briggs/May Scholarship
Each college is asked to recommend a student when a Briggs Scholar does not return to school or fails to maintain acceptable standard of scholarship or conduct. The University Committee then fills the vacancy with a student of the same classification, but not necessarily from the same college.

Community Scholarships and Grants
Community scholarships and grants are awarded by the individual organizations. Separate applications for these scholarships and grants are available through Financial Aid and Nursing Student Services.

NURSING ALUMNI LOAN FUND


A. Eligibility of Student
1. Junior or Senior level of nursing curriculum.
B. Regulations for a Loan
1. Applications are available through the Nursing Student Services Office.
2. Applications are submitted to the Department Head for Nursing Student Service and are approved by the Undergraduate Admissions and Scholastic Standards Committee.
3. The Department Head of Nursing Student Services notifies applicants of the award.
4. The Department Head of Nursing Student Services alerts Financial Aid to complete a promissory note, which the student then signs.
5. An approved applicant may borrow a maximum of $500.00 for a period not to exceed 12 months.
6. Loans will become due and payable in full, including principal, interest and service charge upon the student's withdrawal or within one week prior to graduation from South Dakota State University if such date occurs before the due date shown on the promissory note.
7. There will be a service charge of $10.00 for each loan granted.
8. Interest on loans will be computed at an annual rate.
9. In case of bankruptcy, the government has ruled that the student loan may be written off.


Nurse Education Assistance Loan Program [External Hyperlink]
The South Dakota Board of Nursing has been authorized to administer a loan fund for nursing students.
A. Eligibility of Students:
1. Is a citizen of the United States and a South Dakota Resident for a minimum of one year immediately proceeding the date of the application.
2. Be accepted into a board approved nursing education program located in South Dakota for licensed practical nurses or registered nurses leading to initial licensure; or be accepted into a nursing education degree enhancement program for registered nurses which is acceptable to the Board.
3. For applicants currently enrolled in a nursing program, have or maintain a satisfactory grade for progression in the nursing education program as determined by the faculty of the institution.

B. Demonstrate Financial Need as Determined by:
1. Personal financial information submitted by the applicant.
2. Evaluation by the Financial Aid officer at the school in which the applicant is enrolled.
3. The amount of financial aid received from other sources in relation to the total direct educational expenses as submitted by the school.

C. Regulations For A Loan:
1. Submit all required application forms provided by the Board by June 1 of the year in which the application is to be considered.
2. The number and amount of each loan will be determined annually by the South Dakota Board of Nursing but may not exceed $1,000 per full academic year.
3. Loan monies may be used only for direct educational expenses such as tuition, books, and fees. Room and board is not considered a direct educational expense.
4. A promissory note for the amount of the loan plus accrued interest will be required before loan monies can be disbursed. If multiple awards are granted, they will be consolidated into one total amount for purposes of estabilshing terms of repayment. Equal portions of the loan amount will be disbursed directly to the educational institution at the beginning of each academic term.
5. The student Borrower may elect to repay the loan either by employment in nursing in South Dakota at a conversion rate of $1.00 per hour or monetary payments within the required time period of five years.

Ione & Reece Lewis Scholarship
Eligible student will receive $500. Individual must be a SDSU College of Nursing student who has completed at least the second semester of the nursing major.Individual must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, demonstrate current or future career in the field of geriatric nursing, be conscientious, display a potential for leadership, and demonstrate an ability to work well with health care personnel. Financial need will be considered, but will not be the deciding factor.

Lewis Scholarship Application

Eligible students can receive financial resources to assist with the expenses associated with completion of a nursing degree through the Sioux Valley Scholar Program.
