Vision Statement
Advancing the Science and Art of Nursing
We believe that nursing science can make significant and original contributions to nursing knowledge development and nursing practice. Research is an integral part of nursing education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The South Dakota State University College of Nursing faculty believes the science and art of nursing are integrated in the scientific processes involved in both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Researchers at the College of Nursing advance the science and art of nursing in three ways:
Developing and Disseminating Knowledge
We are committed to developing knowledge that is relevant to todays global community. Our research involves not only systematic inquiry into human health phenomena, but also addresses the global issues of health, economics, physical and social resources, environmental conditions, population issues, and local, national and international health policies. We believe in knowledge-based nursing practice based on scientific evidence, theoretical perspectives, and the values and beliefs of those for whom nurses provide care. We are actively involved with the dissemination of nursing knowledge through contemporary modalities for publication and presentation of scientific findings.
Addressing Social Justice
We believe nursing research can make a positive contribution to the human condition. We are committed to developing nursing knowledge to promote health and prevent disease in underserved, rural, and reservation populations. We are committed to developing nursing science to address social injustices such as poverty, violence, lack of access, and other health disparities.
Transforming the Healthcare Environment
We are committed to transforming healthcare by studying and developing new healthcare policies, new systems of healthcare delivery, and new health promotion and disease prevention strategies. We are committed to participating in designing strategies to provide access to healthcare for all populations. We value an increased focus on health promotion models of care. Our nurse researchers acknowledge the importance of translational scientific evidence in influencing quality care outcomes in the healthcare environment. Our nurse researchers acknowledge the important responsibility and role healthcare consumers have in accessing and using available healthcare knowledge while participating fully in their healthcare.
