Item

Minimum

Recommended

Comments

Computer

Pentium IV processor for Desktops

OR

Centrino for Laptops

If a graduate student would like to purchase a new Gateway computer with printer for the special price given to undergraduate students go to the eSDSU [External Hyperlink] website for prices and contact information.

Faster processor

If you are purchasing or leasing a new computer, most of the requirements listed will be satisfied.  If you have a computer, we recommend upgrading it as much as possible to enhance your experience and reduce frustration.

RAM

256 Megabytes

More than 256

Memory is relatively inexpensive, and is one of the best ways to enhance performance.

Hard Drive

40 GB

Above 40 GB

Recommend getting the largest drive you can afford.

Operating
System

Windows XP

Windows XP

Better and faster.

CD-ROM

24X speed

24X speed or
higher

All new desktops come with an internal CD-ROM. Readable/Writable CDs are not required yet.

Monitor

14.1" SVGA

15" SVGA

Resolution is important. The larger the monitor, the better the picture will look.

Network Interface

56K Internal
Modem

Ethernet Card

Cable connections are faster, if the service is available in your area.  If you buy a modem, make sure your Internet Service Provider (ISP) supports the type of modem you are buying.  Many phone and TV companies are also offering DSL service.  A high speed internet connection will reduce your waiting time significantly. Call around to find the best deal.

Phone
line

One

Two

Recommend having a second phone line for computer use, if not on cable modem.  A second line also means you or the instructor can call each other if there is a problem while you are still online.

Web
Browser

Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 6)

Current available version

Whatever browser you use, keep it updated.

Internet
Access &
email

Any provider except AOL

Local provider email, not hotmail or yahoo

If you have to call long distance to reach your ISP, you are responsible for the long distance charges.  Due to past experience, we are not recommending AOL accounts because of the compression of attachments.

Sound

Internal

Speakers and microphone

You should have a 32-bit sound card and drivers.  Sound card should be Sound Blaster compatible.

Printer

Ink Jet

Laser

You do not need to get a color printer unless you will do a lot of color printing.  Be sure the printer will print 300 DPI or higher (higher is better and clearer).  Printer speed should be equal to or greater than 6 pager per minute.

Software

Microsoft Office Suite 2003

Microsoft Office Suite 2003

You MUST be able to send and receive attachments to email messages in Microsoft Word. You MUST have PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. Be advised that theses must be submitted to the Graduate School as an Adobe Acrobat .pdf file as well as in hard copy.
