MissionThe mission of the College of Nursing is the education of nurses and other health care professionals who influence the health and quality of life in the state, region and nation. This mission is accomplished through: * recruitment and retention of students that reflect a qualified, diverse student body. * preparation of graduates who are internationally competitive, globally informed, communication-able, change -able and socially responsible. * research to improve nursing and health care. * provision of expertise to consumers, providers and health systems. PhilosophyThe College of Nursing, an integral component of South Dakota State University, contributes significantly to the tripartite mission of the University through faculty commitment to education through teaching/advising, research/creative activity and service. Education Education of nurses and other health care professionals is essential to the health and quality of life in the state, region, and nation. Education is a self-directed, yet interactive lifelong process that empowers learners to think critically and grow toward their potential as individuals and contributing members of the profession and society. The essential components of professional nursing education include liberal education, professional values, core competencies, core knowledge, and role development. The role of faculty is to guide, direct, facilitate and evaluate learning while encouraging curiosity, creativity and independent thinking. The outcome of the educational process is to prepare graduates who are: * internationally competitive in academic preparation. * globally informed and prepared for a diverse world. * communication-able in speaking, writing and technology. * able to embrace change in positive ways. * socially responsible. Undergraduate education prepares individuals for basic entry into nursing practice, while graduate education prepares nurses for advanced or specialty nursing practice. The continuing education program offers updates for nurses committed to lifelong learning. The health science minor offers nursing and other professional students knowledge and skills to promote health, prevent disease and protect the environment. The nursing curriculum is based upon the meta-paradigm of nursing, which includes the concepts of client, health, environment and nursing. Client Each client is a multidimensional being, which includes physical, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual dimensions. Client encompasses the lifespan. The client can be an individual, family, aggregate, community or society/population. Health Health encompasses multidimensional states (physical, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual dimensions) of wellness and illness with both subjective and objective components. Wellness is a perceived balanced state, while illness is a perceived imbalanced state within the dimensions of client. Health is individually defined and dynamic throughout the lifespan, including end of life. Environment The environment consists of dynamic internal and external factors that interact to impact a client?s health. Each client lives within and interacts with an ever-changing environment. The environment can be altered to positively affect a person?s health by changing or removing unhealthy stressors and enhancing or providing health-promoting resources. Client is influenced by and responsive to their environments and can choose to alter their internal and external environments to impact their health and quality of life. Nursing Nursing responds to and interacts with clients and environments to promote quality of life in health, illness and end of life. Nursing, expressed as a professional way of caring, uses both art and science to address all dimensions of the client by applying research and theories. Nursing serves as an intentional catalyst for change to promote health in evolving diverse environments through education, leadership and social responsibility, as well as direct and indirect clinical interventions.
