In 1989, South Dakota State University West River Nursing Department began offering the same four-year baccalaureate nursing program to students living in Rapid City and the West River area. SDSU West River nursing graduates receive a Bachelor of Science degree with a Major in Nursing.
West River pre-nursing students are admitted to SDSU, but enroll in the pre-nursing and university core courses at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology or Black Hills State University.
Similar to the Brookings campus program of study, pre-nursing requirements are usually completed in three semesters followed by five semesters of nursing courses. Although many students graduate after eight semesters of full-time study, others may take longer to complete the program because of other responsibilities that make it difficult for them to be full-time students as they prepare for admission to the nursing program.
At the SDSU West River Nursing Department in Rapid City, students are admitted to the nursing major when they have successfully completed the pre-nursing program requirements. Once admitted to the nursing major, all nursing courses are taught at the Rapid City Regional Health Science Building, located at 1011 11th Street. Admission into the West River nursing program occurs in the Spring and Fall.
The SDSU undergraduate curriculum is centered on preparing professional nurse graduates who are knowledgeable, ethical, think critically, are culturally sensitive, and provide safe client care. The West River Departments faculty is academically prepared and has excellent theoretical knowledge and clinical experiences. As a result, SDSU West River nursing graduates are well prepared for careers in health care and are expected to have exceptional employment opportunities throughout the next decade.
The College of Nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). SDSU graduates continue to score above the national average on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). As a result, regional and national demand for our baccalaureate prepared nurses continues to be strong.
