I was born and raised in Uruguay, South America, where I completed my medical doctor degree in 1984, and my Residency in obstetrics and gynecology in 1991. I also completed a Masters in Public Health - Maternal and Child Health major, at the University Of Minnesota - School Of Public Health in 1997, and a fellowship in Adolescent Health with the Adolescent Health Training Program, Dept. of Pediatrics. This training resulted in a working opportunity with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) at the Latin American Center of Perinatology in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Before coming to SDSU in 2001, I was working as a consultant for PAHO, and as an Associate Professor of OB/GYN. My main activities were teaching undergraduate and graduate medical students, providing technical support to health organizations and health professionals in Latin American and Caribbean countries in the area of maternal, child health and adolescent health, and developing applied research. Several book chapters and publications in peer reviewed journals were the result of my work in Minnesota and with PAHO.
I am currently teaching health science courses, I am also involved in research projects in the area of maternal and child health and I am working with the SD Dept of Health, Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.
I enjoy contributing with my cultural diverse background and my professional experience to the education and training of students at the College of Nursing and other colleges, and sharing my experience with other faculty members as well. A diverse cultural perspective and my background in public health and womens health are valuable contributions to the college.
