Human Development and Family Studies Major

The human development and family studies major focuses on human development, behavior and relationships throughout the lifespan. Course work, observation and practical experiences offer you understanding of yourself and others as growing, changing individuals and as members of families and the larger community.

Degree Offered

A bachelor of science degree in family and consumer sciences can be earned with a major in human development and family studies. This major provides an interdisciplinary approach to study and work with individuals, couples and familes.

Minor programs which complement the major include sociology, psychology, health sciences, consumer affairs, gerontology, juvenile justice, and recreation. The master of science degree in family and consumer sciences (Graduate ProgramClick to view SDSU's Hyperlink Policy) is available for students wishing to continue beyond the bachelor's degree. The program allows concentrated study in human development and family studies.

All graduates of the human development and family studies major share a common base of knowledge, skills and experiences.

Career Opportunities

Human Development and family studies provides fulfilling careers for qualified individuals including the following: social services case worker, program director for a youth, family or senior citizen program, service provider at a residential treatment center, youth organization worker, individual counselor or marriage and family therapist (requires additional education and training beyond the bachelor of science degree).
