Minor in Gerontology

Description:  The gerontology minor prepares graduates to work directly with or on behalf of older adults by drawing on coursework from multiple disciplines and collaborating with practitioners in aging-related professions.  Students may complete the 18-credit gerontology minor entirely online or with a combination of on-campus and online classes.

Required:   *GERO 201:   Introduction to Gerontology (3 credits)

8 credits selected from the following "Level One" courses (which have an aging emphasis):

*BIO 425:  Biology of Aging

 CA 442:   Family Resource Management

*GERO 492: Current Topics in Gerontology (Intergenerational Issues)

*HDFS 347:  Human Development III: Adulthood

*NURS 201:  Medical Terminology

*PSYC 325:  Psychology of Aging

         *available online

An additional 7 credits from courses which address aging or discuss the physical or social context of people (For most students, these credit requirements are met by completing university-required core courses and/or credits required to complete majors).

For questions about a gerontology minor, please contact  Renee Oscarson (renee.oscarson@sdstate.edu), Coordinataor, Gerontology Minor, Human Development, Consumer & Family Sciences.  For more information about careers related to aging, see the Careers in Aging website, sponsored by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.  (url:  http://careersinaging.com)
