Early Childhood Education
The early childhood education major focuses on child development from birth to eight years of age in the areas of cognitive, physical, social and emotional development. Coursework, observation and practical experiences offer an understanding of children as they grow and develop, constantly changing throughout childhood.
Degrees Offered
A bachelor of science (B.S.) degree in family and consumer sciences can be earned with a major in early childhood education. Students can choose from one of three specializations: birth through preschool education (birth to 5), birth through age eight early childhood education (birth to 8) or the cooperative program to obtain elementary and early childhood teaching certification. The cooperative program for elementary and early childhood certification is offered in cooperation with four other South Dakota universities including Black Hills State University (BHSU), Dakota State University (DSU), Northern State University (NSU) and The University of South Dakota (USD). Additional time is spent at BHSU, DSU, NSU or USD. Each specialization allows students to focus on a particular age span in working with children and their families.
A master of science (M.S.) degree
in family and consumer sciences is available for students wishing to continue beyond the bachelors degree. The program allows an emphasis in early childhood education.
