Apparel Merchandising & Interior Design (AMID) – Mission Statement

Teaching – The Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design at SDSU has broad based, non-specialized programs in the areas of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design that offer students problem-solving experiences in all the major related areas.  The mission of both programs is to provide educational experiences and skill development to enable graduates to successfully obtain entry-level employment in any part of the nation.  Faculty seek out involvement of local and regional professionals in order to enrich the program and maintain currency with regional practices.  Issues of national and global importance are included in courses and activities so that students will graduate with an awareness of the challenges and opportunities in the world of their professional futures.

Apparel Merchandising courses provide knowledge of the fashion industry including production, wholesaling and retailing, and for consumer acquisition and use of apparel and household textiles. The cultural and scientific aspects of apparel and textiles are examined with emphasis on aesthetic, economic, historical, sociological, and psychological factors.  The Interior Design curriculum promotes awareness and knowledge of the contributions of interior design to the health, safety, and well-being of people, with an emphasis on quality of life and a balanced approach in both residential and commercial design areas.

Service – Faculty maintain currency in their fields of knowledge, uses of technology, and understanding of current issues to inform students, regional professionals, and the citizens of the state and region of the importance of each field in quality-of-life issues.

Research & Creative Activity – Faculty contribute new knowledge gained through research and creative activity relevant to each field of inquiry.  Apparel Merchandising faculty are examining the influence of technology on rural consumers, the impact of specific advertising campaigns, the value of customer service training, the effectiveness of experiential learning among students, and the relationship between appearance and identity as it relates to gender construction, issues of power, aesthetics, and material culture analysis.  Interior Design faculty are researching such topics as straw bale building techniques, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), the Eden AlternativeTM, and the social and cultural needs of Native American housing.

For more information about specific research projects, please refer to AMID Faculty and Staff page.
