Apparel Merchandising

Apparel Merchandising prepares students for careers in the dynamic, ever-changing fashion industry. The business and design emphasis in  apparel merchandising prepares people for positions making and selling fashion goods, and as consultants who help others plan wardrobes, produce quality garments, and efficiently and effectively manage people and product in a retail setting.

Students in this program take classes in design and manufacturing, textiles, international trade, and the history of costume. The department's classes also focus on product knowledge, design principles, consumer behavior, and organization and operation of the fashion industry. Communication skills are emphasized, as are business courses.

Off campus opportunities include study tours to major U.S. and international market centers.

Additionally, SDSU has an arrangement with the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), which allows students to spend a year studying in New York City. Those classes apply directly to the bachelor's degree at SDSU and to an associate degree from FIT.
