Project Title:  Valo™ Manufacturing Carts

Group Members:  Dustin Bakker, Paul Ebsen, Mike Mourer, Troy Schmig

Department:  Mechanical Engineering

Faculty Advisor:  Mike Twedt

Sponsor:  Daktronics, Inc.

The focus of this project is to build the “ultimate” manufacturing cart to aid in the manufacture of the Daktronics Valo™ Digital Billboards. The most important aspect in the manufacturing cart design is to be safety. A major safety concern at Daktronics is any process that utilizes a crane to rotate a billboard and the swing hazard that it creates. The main objective of the cart design is to be able to lift and rotate the display during assembly from its face, to its back, and then set the assembled billboard down vertically. Another key objective in the design of the manufacturing cart is its ability to be agile enough to lift, rotate, and move billboards of all different sizes through the manufacturing area. Project expectations are to yield an optimized design, a tested and validated prototype, and a cost savings analysis upon project completion. To complete these expectations, a working three-dimensional model will need to be completed to assist in the analysis of the stresses on the cart along with possible points at which failure could occur. This model will need to be scrutinized at every possible place that there could be a potential safety hazard. Once the model has been finalized, the prototype will be constructed and re-tested for possible problems or improvements or both. When the prototype is approved to go into production, more testing will be conducted to make sure that nothing has been overlooked during the design or manufacturing processes. After the carts have been utilized for a period of time, testing will be done again to ensure that nothing will fail or is starting to fail. This will help to ensure that our main concern for the safety of the individuals using the cart has been met. The inspection after the break-in period will include inspecting the welds for any cracks or breaks that may have developed during the standard operations. All of the mechanical devices will be inspected for any worked out, stripped, frayed, and broken components that could lead to future problems. To ensure that all of these measures will be sustained, a manual for the use and inspection of the cart will be created. With all of the safety measures and design criteria in place, the cart should have a long and productive production life.
