Mission Statement:The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, in support of the mission of the College of Engineering is to provide a highly respected, rigorous, and practical professional education for Mechanical Engineering students oriented toward applied problem solving; to conduct meaningful research which broadens the base of engineering and scientific knowledge with a regional emphasis, and to provide technology based and related managerial assistance to existing and emerging businesses, industry and government.

Mechanical Engineering is a profession in which knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.

Our students are employed in virtually all industries including automotive, buildings/construction (HVAC), chemical, aircraft/aerospace, power, petroleum, computer, machinery (industrial, farm, office), plastics, electronic, textile, pharmaceutical, paper products, utilities, and many others. Their work takes them to many parts of the world; they can probe the depths of the oceans or explore outer space as astronauts. Mechanical Engineering is an exciting profession which offers breadth, flexibility and individuality to those who want challenge and satisfaction rather than just a job.

Design is integrated throughout the curriculum. The student deals with the systems approach to solving problems where ideas, imagination, modeling and analysis are joined together to create a new component, product, or process. Second-year students work in teams on re-engineering projects and design contest products. Third-year students must complete numerous class and lab design assignments and fourth-year students complete yearlong capstone team design projects.

Computer literacy and technology receive extensive coverage throughout the ME curriculum. Students utilize AutoCAD, Pro-Engineer, Solidworks, ALGOR, ANSYS, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Matlab, Working Model, Fortran, etc. as well as make use of local and global Internet connections. There are more job openings than graduates and a high percentage of graduates are employed in South Dakota.

The Mechanical Engineering program at SDSU is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission/Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET).

Numerous scholarships are available for Mechanical Engineering students.  Please click on the scholarships link at the upper left corner of this page.  A scholarship form is available under the College of Engineering link.  Fill the application out completely and return.  These applications are reviewed by a college committee for COE scholarships and then are reviewed in Mechanical Engineering for our department scholarships.  For any questions on M.E. scholarships, please see or call Dr. Charles Remund @ 605-688-6395 or e-mail:  Charles.Remund@sdstate.edu.
