Master of Science in Industrial Management (MSIM)
For those who are already managers, the MSIM program offers an opportunity to develop new management styles and techniques while upgrading and strengthening their present background. For new people, those who are moving into management or aspire to be managers, there is a basic course work for studying the people-to-people issues along with offerings of technical topics.
Success in the management of complex systems, whether they are people based or product based, depends on a persons background and education. Managers of today must be flexible, adaptable, and abreast of technological changes within organizations. Opportunities in the global marketplace have the inherent necessity of working with people of different cultures and social communities.
The preparation of a successful manager includes a basic knowledge of management techniques along with appropriate analytical and technical tools. Once a person has achieved this level of competence, they are positioned for opportunities in a complex organization.
A visit with the program coordinator is advisable. Your academic background and experience will determine courses which lead to the management degree. The flexibility of the program allows the student to make adjustments in their academic plan as they progress toward the degree.
Appropriate courses from the University of South Dakota and from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology can be transferred for credit toward the MSIM degree. Through long-standing cooperative relationships, a special provision exists to allow the student to seamlessly transfer up to 12 credits of these graduate courses. Selection of courses must be done in consultation with the MSIM program coordinator.
The individualized program of study…
There are three methods of progress toward the MSIM degree. Students may elect to pursue the traditional thesis route: this is valuable for individuals who anticipate future graduate work toward achieving the terminal degree in a related field. Most students select the research/design paper route: this requirement generally takes the form of a project in collaboration with local or regional industry to solve a problem or to improve a system or process. A third option is a non-thesis program with additional coursework culminating in a Comprehensive Exam. Regardless of the option selected, the student works closely with his/her Major Advisor to develop the program of study plan, make consistent progress toward completion of the degree, and to show proficiency in integrating and applying industrial management concepts through the Final Oral Exam.
The student develops a set of courses for a plan of study by working with the program coordinator. The strength of the degree allows students flexibility and yet requires diversity in the subjects studied. To insure diversity there is a core of courses that are selected from the following five topic areas:
|
Finance |
Human Resources |
Information Systems |
Manufacturing |
Analysis |
Several courses are available in these areas, and you will develop a curriculum that fits your goals and background.
