Why Latin American Area Studies?

LAAS is a interdisciplinary program which focuses on cultures here in the US and in Latin America. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to realize the goal of an enriching and liberal education while preparing for future employment options.
Knowledge and understanding of Latin America are essential because of the interdependent nature of the world economy and market potential of the Americas.
The Latino population is growing rapidly in every state. Increasing our understanding of that heritage gives all of us an understanding and appreciation of our world culture, and better prepares us to meet the challenges facing the United States as a whole. Proficiency in the Spanish language opens the horizons both here and abroad.
