POLITICAL SCIENCE

Quote
Read this article on cnn.com about the career prospects for political science majors.Click to view SDSU's Hyperlink Policy

Political Science is the study of the behavior of persons in making public policies and in creating, organizing, and operating government institutions. Political science examines the organization and operation of political parties, local, state, national and international governments and their functions.

Academic Advisors help students meet their career goals, whether they include graduate school, law school, secondary teaching or government work. Additional classes in history, economics, sociology, geography, and psychology are also important for an understanding of the beginnings and purposes of political institutions.

Many SDSU political science students earn college credit away from campus as interns at the local, state, and national level of government. Interns often work for the executive or legislative branches of government, and some work on election campaigns.

The Arrowhead Model UN Conference
The Arrowhead Model UN Conference was hosted by the SDSU Political Science Club in April 2000.

Degrees Offered
Political Science majors can earn either a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degree. The difference between the degrees is that the BA requires the study of a foreign language, and the BS requires more work in the natural sciences.

Curriculum
A degree in political science is normally earned in four years by meeting the general university and College of Arts and Sciences class requirements. Students must also complete the political science requirements of 36 credits as well as taking other classes of interest that add to their intellectual and career development.

In the political science program, SDSU offers over 20 classes yearly from the fields of American government, political theory, international politics and comparative government, public law and public administration.

Since the political science program is flexible, many students combine their political science major with a second major. By choosing classes with care, in order to meet requirements in two fields, most students can finish the double major in four years.
