DEPARTMENT OF RELIGION
The academic study of religion involves the use of critical and interpretive skills in examining the vast range of ideas, practices, and writings that are reflected in religion. Present course work is designed to enrich the student's perspectives and introduce some of the important features of philosophy and religion. While students from any major might greatly profit from examining religion, its study is particularly useful to those pursuing graduate work in religion or history, or those entering seminary in preparation for the Ministry.
A minor in religion is available in either the B.A. or B.S. program. This minor requires 15 credit hours of religion, including Religion 213.
Also available is a Concentration of Religion within the General Studies B.S. with the following recommended curriculum.
All students should take 9 hours from among the following:
Rel 213: Introduction to Religion
Rel 220: World Religions
Rel 224: Old Testament
Rel 225: New Testament
Rel 237: Religion in American Culture
Rel 238: Native American Religion
In addition, they should choose 21 from among the following:
Rel 331: Feminism and Theology
Rel 332: Environmental Ethics
Rel 360: Moral and Ethical Perspectives on Death and Dying
Rel 370: Philosophy of Religion
Rel 401: History of Western Religious Thought I
Rel 402: History of Western Religious Thought II
Rel 492 & 592: Special Problems in Religion
Rel 493: Topics in Religion: Evolution, Cosmology and God
Rel 495: Internship
If the student desires, 6 of the previous 21 may be choosen from the following:
Hist 323: Roman Empire and the Early Church
Hist 325: Medieval Europe
Hist 326: Renaissance and Reformation
Engl 311: Literature and the Bible
Eur 320: European Studies - Humanities
