Music Scholarships at SDSU

Who should audition?
All students entering SDSU as music majors must perform an audition. In addition, any student seeking a scholarship to perform in an ensemble or ensembles must perform an audition.

Auditions for all degree programs in the department are conducted by members of the Music Scholarship Committee, or may be conducted by the appropriate applied faculty member. Students will be notified in writing of the results of the audition.

When are auditions?
Auditions in Brookings are scheduled for Feb. 23 and 29, 2008.
Auditions in Minneapolis, MN; Rapid City, SD; and Sioux City, IA are scheduled for Feb. 18, 2008.

If, for unusual circumstances, a live audition is not an option, a recorded audition may be submitted. All recorded auditions must be received by February 20. Compact discs are preferred.

Music Audition Requirements
The Audition
All auditions are scheduled in ten-minute time blocks. If a student desires to audition in both a primary and a secondary performance area, the audition will still last ten minutes.

Instrumentalists
Instrumentalists should be prepared to perform two works which best exhibit their musicianship, such as contest solo pieces, etudes, or other appropriate selections or excerpts.

Vocalists
Vocalists should be prepared to perform two art songs. Foreign language repertoire is encouraged but not required. The use of 'pop' repertoire is discouraged for an audition.

Pianists
Pianists should prepare two pieces of constrasting styles from the standard classical repertoire. Performing by memory is preferred but not required. A jazz selection may be substituted for one of the repertoire pieces.

Special considerations for Voice and/or Piano Study
At the time of registration, all students desiring to study voice or piano are required to complete the Application to Study Voice or Application to Study Piano form and return it to the Music Department Secretary in Room 205, Lincoln Music Hall.
