 David Reynolds
David Reynolds is Head of the Department of Music at South Dakota State University. He holds the BME from the University of Kansas, the MM in trumpet performance from Florida State University, and the DMA in trumpet performance from the University of Maryland at College Park. Since joining the SDSU faculty, he has taught Romantic and 20th-century music literature, world music literature, and a Germany/Austria travel course for musicians and artists. He has also taught applied brass instruments and coached chamber groups. As a trumpeter, David enjoys teaching, coaching, and preparing inventive and sometimes unusual recitals each year. Recent recital themes have included “The Trumpet in Mixed Media,” “A Trumpet in our Time: Music by Living Composers,” and “Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna.” He has performed both as a soloist and as a section member with numerous professional, semi-professional, and amateur groups.
As a writer, he has contributed articles and reviews to Montana: The Magazine of Western History, the American Bandmasters Association’s Journal of Band Research, the International Trumpet Guild Journal, the South Dakota Musician, and the Montana Cadenza. He is the conductor of the Brookings Community Band, and conducts the Messiah Festival, the primary fundraiser for Billings Montana’s Meadowlark House for cancer patient care. Prior to coming to SDSU in 2005, he served on faculties in Montana and Colorado, and also served as a trumpeter with the United States Army Band (Pershing’s Own) in Washington, D.C.
David is married to Rina, who works for the SDSU Foundation, and has two children - William (8) and Thomas (5).
