A Welcome from the Department Head On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the South Dakota State University Music Department, I send you greetings!
Our program has a rich history dating back over one-hundred years. Today, the work of the music department is led by the inspiration of fifteen dedicated, knowledgeable artist/scholars. These professors, educated in some of the nations most prestigious music academies, direct ensembles, teach lessons, and conduct classroom sessions that ultimately touching the lives of over 8% of the SDSU student population each year.
SDSU's musical ensembles have garnered international attention for quality. The Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band has been featured in parades and festivals from coast to coast. Our Concert Choir has performed for prestigious national music conferences and in some of the most well-known concert halls in the United States and Europe. Jazz Ensembles, the Womens Chorale, the Statesmen Mens Chorus, and a variety of chamber groups round out the ample opportunities for students of varying degrees of interest. The department also serves as the home of the SDSU Civic Orchestra, which performs four concerts each year.
The department enjoys excellent facilities including historic Lincoln Music Hall and the new, state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center. The Larson Memorial Concert Hall is one of few concert halls in the central United States to permanently house a Fazioli concert grand piano.
We are by design a department that focuses its attention on undergraduate learning. Our degrees in music education, music performance, and music merchandising uniquely meet the preparatory needs of our music majors.
Again, we thank you for visiting our site. We look forward to serving you!
Sincerely,
David Reynolds, DMA Head and Professor, Department of Music |
