The major in Spanish requires a minimum of 36 credit hours in Spanish beyond Spanish 101 (101 credits no longer count towards a major or minor). Course work should include 102, 201, 202, 310 and at least 18 additional credit hours of upper-division (300-400) classes. Upper-division course work must include a minimum of 4 credit hours in literature, 4 credit hours in civilization and culture, and 2 credit hours in advanced language study.

Spanish 101-102 Introductory Spanish I and II (4credits) Introduces the fundamental elements of Spanish grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure. Communicative and contextual approach toward proficiency and acquisition implemented.
Spanish 201-202 Intermediate Spanish (3 credits) Students build upon Introductory Spanish to improve their speaking, reading, writing and listening skills. Authentic materials used to promote an understanding of Hispanic cultures.
Spanish 211-212 Intermediate Oral Practice (2 credits) Rich in conversational activities, oral production and presentations.
Spanish 283 Applied Spanish (1-3 credits) Practical Spanish useful in diverse situations such as foreign travel, commerce, fine arts, etc. Topics will vary.
Spanish 308 Spanish for Health Professions (2-3 credits) Places special emphasis on the language a health professional will need when communicating with a patient. Medical terminology, anatomy, personal information and expressions of feelings will be covered.
Spanish 310 Practical Language Skills (3 credits) Focuses on many of the more difficult basic grammatical points (e.g. ser/estar, preterite/imperfect past tense, forms of the subjunctive, etc.) as well as exploring advanced structures.
Spanish 330 Reading and Writing for Communication (3 credits) Development of reading and writing proficiency through examination of authentic text samples (literary and periodical) from the Spanish-speaking world. Introduction to research methods will also be included.
Spanish 340 Phonetics (3 credits) Introduces the intermediate/advanced student of Spanish to the sound system of the language. Emphasis on developing the student's ability to understand and to produce sounds unique to the Spanish language.
Spanish 350 Business Spanish (3 credits) An introduction to the Spanish language of everyday business dealings and an overview of practical and relevant information necessary for people doing business in Spanish-speaking countries.
Spanish 353 Spanish Literature (3 credits) Introduction to Spanish literature through readings and discussion in Spanish of representative literary works from various genres and epochs.
Spanish 355 Spanish American Literature (3 credits) Introduction to Spanish American literature through readings and discussion in Spanish of representative literary works from various genres and epochs.
Spanish 433 Spanish Civilization and Culture (3 credits) Geography, history, politics and the arts of Spain.
Spanish 435 Latin American Civilization and Culture (3 credits) The study of daily life-ways and significant accomplishments of Spanish American countries in the past and present.
Spanish 443 Linguistics (3 credits) In-depth study of traditional grammar as well as an introduction to linguistics as it applies to Spanish. Practical application. Strongly recommended for future teachers and individuals seeking bilingual positions in the public sector.
Spanish 444 Introduction to Translation (3 credits) An introduction to the principles and practice of translating a variety of text types from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish.
Spanish 476 19th and 20th Century Spanish Literature (3 credits) Major movements and works. Reading, writing and discussions in Spanish. Topics vary.
Spanish 484 20th Century Spanish American Literature (3 credits) Major movements and works. Reading, writing and discussions in Spanish. Topics vary.
Spanish 491 Independent Study (1-6 credits) Readings and discussions in Spanish as directed by the instructor. May be repeated for credit.
Spanish 492 Topics in Spanish (1-3 credits) Special courses designed to complement the existing curriculum in such areas as business, politics, economy, literature, and history of the language. Will be offered only when student demand and staff availability warrant.
