Over 6,000 languages are spoken in the world today. Learning a second language can give you access to new music, new literature, new art and new people, thus expanding your view of the world and your place within it. Academically, research has shown that math and verbal exam scores (SATs, ACTs, GREs, MCATs and LSATs) increase with each additional year of second language study. This means that the longer you study a second language, the stronger your skills become, leading to success in school and in your career. There is an ever growing demand for bilingual professionals in the workplace.

The SDSU Modern Language Department offers major and minor degrees in French, German, and Spanish. First and second year Lakota classes are offered via the Direct Digital Network. First-year Arabic and Chinese are also taught when instructors are available.

Study Abroad opportunities are organized each year by Modern Language faculty. Students can experience immersion both in the culture and the target language of foreign host countries. Visit our Study Abroad link (above left) to find out more about past and current trips. Our department has language clubs for French, German and Spanish students to socialize, promotes global goodwill and understanding, and plan a a variety of activities for the campus and community.

Foreign Language Placement Exam. We advise new, incoming students to take the Placement Exam to help them decide what level they should enroll in. The WebCAPE online placement exam is available for students of German, French or Spanish (see link below). Students may purchase credits from Academic Evaluation and Assessment on 9th and Medary for any exempted basic or intermediate language class (101, 102, 201) once they have completed a higher level class with a grade of C or better and the grade has been posted.
