Dr. Getz teaches the basic core of news writing and reporting classes. He handles the classroom lecture sessions and two or more studio sections of Basic Newswriting (MCOM210) and Public Affairs Reporting (MCOM 438). He also teaches History of Journalism (MCOM 417) every other semester.

He is a veteran of 18 years in daily newspapers, serving in a variety of newsroom positions, including law enforcement reporter, general assignment reporter, local government reporter, legislative correspondent, sports editor, copy editor and news editor. Additionally he worked for two years in corporate communications.


Dr. Getz holds master's degree in Journalism from the University of Arizona and a doctor of education degree from the University of South Dakota. His doctoral research, which focused on students’ perceptions of the value of their journalism internships, was based in part on his service as coordinator of journalism internships at SDSU for 19 years.
